The Arizona Wildcats traveled to Los Angeles last week with one thing in mind: a sweep. After a miserable performance against the UCLA Bruins on Thursday a split was all they could hope for come Sunday’s matchup against the Trojans. There was a complete lack of focus and passion in a very important game against the Bruins. There was nothing good about that game which is why no Stamp of Approval will be awarded for such a disappointing loss.
Turnovers have plagued this young Wildcat basketball team. They had 16 in a loss to the Bruins and 17 in their 57-46 win against the USC Trojans on Sunday afternoon. They could have won by 45 points on Sunday, but if they keep turning it over like they are doing, there is nothing to be happy with or approve of. It is ugly basketball and the Cats will get dominated by the better, more disciplined teams out there.
My Stamp of Approval for Sunday’s game goes to the starter who protected the ball the best: Jesse Perry. Perry played more minutes than any other Wildcat and only had one turnover. He also was the team’s leading scorer with 20 points. He plays smart and he plays hard and I can only hope that his play will rub off on some of his teammates. There are just too many stupid decisions being made out on the court and it could cost this team a trip to the NCAA tournament if they don’t get it corrected. To their credit, Arizona came out fired up on Sunday and they got the must-win against the Trojans, but they just didn’t play smart .The young guys need to slow down and wait for the court to open up and the veterans need to play with more leadership and experience. This team has the potential to do some damage in March but they need to play smart enough to get there first and foremost.
I predict Sean Miller whips these guys into shape for this week’s games against the Oregon schools and that the Wildcats get that sweep they coveted for last week. Predictions for this week against Oregon and Oregon St. at McKale center in Tucson?
