With all the recent turnaround with the Arizona roster it looks like we are no where near finished with recruiting for the next two seasons in Tucson. This may just be the tip of the iceberg with recruits coming in and leaving the program. Regardless, it now looks like one returning player may be the key to how the Wildcat basketball team plays next year. That player is Nick Johnson.
Nick Johnson was forced to play out of position at times this season when Josiah Turner was suspended in games. Next year he will not be forced to play out of position because it will be what is expected of him all year. After thinking about it for a while not only do I think Nick Johnson can handle the duties but I think he will thrive at the new position.
Johnson has been a play maker since he stepped on the court in Tucson and that is exactly what we need from our point guards. He has absolutely no fear and with an offseason of ball handling drills and getting his head around the pass first mind set I think he has a high ceiling at the point guard spot. This will also give him his best opportunity to take his game to the pro level. He is just too short to play shooting guard and honestly doesn’t shoot well enough to play shooting guard at the pro level.
Jordin Mayes will as always be a solid back up at the point guard position which will give the team a little depth at the guard spots. I still think we may see another guard recruit coming in to Tucson soon to give us more depth in the back court but regardless I think Nick Johnson should be running the point at the start of next season.
A lot of people including myself think that this means that the Wildcats will be looking to make their Final Four run in the 2013-2014 season but I say don’t sleep on the Cats next year. Johnson can run the point and with that huge frontcourt we could win a lot of games. Bear Down!!
