Wildcat Basketball: An Overview of Preseason Rankings and Polls

The 2012-2013 Arizona Wildcats basketball team is receiving a lot of preseason love from polls and pundit’s across the nation. The early hype and excitement is also taking over Tucson as the annual Red/Blue scrimmage sold out McKale center on Oct. 21. Below is a quick guide of where the Wildcats rank according to the multiple experts and preseason polls:

The ESPN/USA Today Coaches’ Poll:

– No. 11

The Associated Press Media Poll:

–         No. 12

Sports Illustated:

–         No. 10

–         “One big question surrounding the Wildcats, who have more than enough talent to make a Final Four run: Can graduate transfer Mark Lyons be converted into a capable point guard, after spending the past two seasons in an auxiliary, combo-guard role alongside Tu Holloway at Xavier?”

Athlon Sports:

–         No. 7

–         “The basketball environment in Tucson is such that expectations have returned to Olson-era levels. The acquisition of Lyons turned Arizona from a possible top-25 team to one that believes it can win a national championship.”

Sporting News:

–         No. 8

–         “Arizona has quality depth, going 10 deep, thanks to four years of coach Sean Miller’s recruiting. The Wildcats have a good mix of youth and experience, of athleticism and size, toughness and finesse. Adding hard-nosed veteran Mark Lyons from Xavier to tie it all together at the point could launch this team toward a fulfilling postseason.”

NBC Sports:

–         No. 17

“If everything breaks the right way, having the Wildcats ranked 17th heading into the season will look silly. But if everything goes wrong, it will as well. I’d say a Pac-12 title, a three or four seed in the NCAA tournament and a trip to the second weekend should be the expectation for this group.”

CBS Sports Preseason Bracketology:

–         No. 2 seed in the West

–         Out of five writers, Doug Gottlieb and UA alum Jeff Goodman selected the Wildcats for their Final Four. Goodman, Gottlieb and Jeff Borzello chose UA to win the Pac-12. Gottlieb selected Arizona as his National Champion. He also selected Sean Miller as his Coach of the Year.
