The Arizona Wildcats men’s basketball team was coming off a tough loss at home to Cal on Sunday. They were traveling to Colorado to play on the road in a hostile environment in an important Pac-12 game. The last time the Wildcats had lost back-to-back games…Justin Bieber was still a cute kid and not yet a tool, The Avengers was still “Coming Soon” to theaters everywhere, Lebron James was still ringless and Twilight was…well I’m not quite sure where Twilight was in its ridiculous saga because, well, I hate Twilight. The point of my story is that it has been a loooong time since the Wildcats lost back-to-back games. It has been just about a year and it just so happens that Colorado was involved then just like they were now.
The Colorado Buffaloes handed Arizona their fourth loss of the season on Thursday Night in Boulder, 71-58. It was never really close as Colorado came out hot and stayed that way for 40 minutes. It’s like they were out for revenge or something. But seriously, the Buffs out hustled, out fought and out hearted the Wildcats on Valentine’s Day. Xavier Johnson and Spencer Dinwiddie were lights out and hit multiple daggers throughout the game that crushed any momentum that Cats were trying to put together. It also didn’t help that Colorado could not miss…even on bad shots. They drained more last-second, desperation shots than I think I have ever seen. Regardless, the Buffs outplayed the Wildcats and earned the victory. They are now six out of their last seven and rolling when it counts.
The lack of passion and heart from the Wildcats is concerning. I think I’m going to chalk it up as a late-season lull. You know those work days when 3 p.m. hit and you are just dragging? I think that’s what the Cats are going through. It has been a long season with lots of stress/dramatics and they are dragging a bit. Well, if they want to get a decent seed in the tournament and make their life a lot easier they will chug that red bull and grow some wings to finish off the rest of the Pac-12 season…and it all starts with their “3:30 p.m.” match-up against Utah on Sunday. This is a must-win game and it’s time the players play like that.
PS – Really, Colorado? Really? Rushing the court like you are National Champs? #ActLikeYou’veBeenThereBefore
