The Arizona Wildcats were swept on the road for the first time since the 2010-2011 season. They were embarrassed by a below-average USC team on Wednesday and then got out-played and out-coached on national television by UCLA on Saturday Night.
What happened to this team?? The Arizona Wildcats are playing their worst basketball at the worst possible time. They are 3-4 in their past seven games and in all truthfulness, have only played one good game in that time-span (win at home against the Washington Huskies). The defense is abysmal, the leadership is gone, the fire and passion have been extinguished and the lack of a true point guard is starting to stick out like a sore thumb. Simply put…it’s ugly and, seeing that it’s March already, there is not a lot of time to right the ship.
As the team’s confidence continues to plummet, so does their seed in the NCAA Tournament. A week ago the Wildcats were being projected as a No. 3 seed in the West. Now, in many projections, they are out of the West and sitting on the No. 5 or even No. 6 line. ESPN’s latest Bracketology lists the Wildcats as a No. 5 seed (and dropping). The Cats, who were projected to win the Pac-12 Conference, will likely enter the Pac-12 Tournament as a very disappointing No. 4 seed.
Arizona fans everywhere hope the past week has been a slap to the face that wakes these players out of their coma. The Wildcats still have an opportunity to finish strong and enter the NCAA Tourney with some swag! Arizona will host their rival Arizona State on Saturday in the regular season finale and will then travel to Las Vegas for the Pac-12 Tournament.
I’ll leave you with one positive nugget… The last time Arizona was swept in a weekend pair of Pac-12 Conference games was also during the second-to-last weekend of the 2010-11 season – and also in Los Angeles – before the Wildcats went on to the Elite Eight. #BearDown
How far do you see the Arizona Wildcats going in this years NCAA Tournament??
