Top Recruit Aaron Gordon Commits to the Arizona Wildcats

Tucson is buzzing today as if the Arizona Wildcats were getting ready to play in the Final Four this weekend. As we all know, The Wildcats got knocked out of the 2013 tournament last week by Ohio State. So why is Tucson abuzz? Well, I think the fans just got really excited about the 2014 NCAA Tournament. News just broke that five-star forward Aaron Gordon will play basketball for the Arizona Wildcats next season.

Gordon is ranked as the No. 4 overall recruit by ESPN and chose Sean Miller and Arizona over the Washington Huskies, Oregon Ducks and Kentucky Wildcats.

“I hope Tucson is celebrating because I am going to be a West Coast Wildcat,” said Gordon during his press conference.

This commitment makes Gordon the highest rated player that Miller has recruited to UA. He will join fellow McDonalds All-American Rondae Jefferson-Hollis and NorCal guard Elliott Pitts in the Wildcats’ 2013 recruiting class. Arizona’s ESPN 2013 class ranking jumped from No. 25 to No. 5  after the news about Gordon broke.

This is a huge signing for Sean Miller and the Wildcats. “Aaron Gordon” is trending on Twitter as I write this and national experts are applauding Sean Miller and many of them already predicting Arizona as a Final Four team in 2014. Obviously, it’s a little early to start booking your hotel in Arlington but the excitement and potential is well warranted. Let’s take a look at the Arizona roster for next season:

Projected Starting Line-up: 1. TJ McConnell 2. Nick Johnson 3. Aaron Gordon 4. Brandon Ashley/Grant Jerrett 5. Kaleb Tarczewski!

Reserves (Assuming no transfers or other non-senior departures):

Gabe York G
Jordin Mayes G
Rondae Jefferson-Hollis F
Elliott Pitts G
Angelo Chol F
Matt Korcheck F

Are you kidding me? This team is loaded. That is certainly the most talented roster Arizona has seen since 2001. Not even Ed Rush can bring this team down (too soon?).

Joking aside, this team truly does look like a Final Four team on paper and the Gordon commitment was huge for Arizona on many, many levels. That being said, on paper and on the court are two completely different things! Kentucky looked great on paper this past year and was highly ranked going into the season and they ended up missing the NCAA Tournament. Many other teams have looked great on paper but have struggled. So let’s certainly get excited and let’s get behind this team like only Tucson does but let’s be careful with cutting down the nets already. Let’s be careful with getting the idea in these players heads that they have already achieved greatness. It will be a long, tough road with ups-and-downs but Miller has certainly put this program in the position to succeed. #ThisIsArizonaBasketball
