Arizona Hosts "Red Carpet" Recruiting Event

The Arizona Wildcats held an official “Red Carpet” event Saturday at Arizona Stadium to celebrate the grand opening of the new Lowell-Stevens Football Facility.

After the general public was given a tour of the stadium in the morning, football head coach Rich Rodriguez and his staff played host to more than 30 recruits from the Class of 2014.

Arizona Director of On-Campus Recruiting Matt Dudek hinted Friday that it was going to be a big recruiting weekend, and as expected, the Wildcats added to their Pac-12-leading 14 verbal commitments.

Here’s a run-down of the new members of Arizona’s 2014 recruiting class (star rating according to 247sports.com):

  • Three-star tight end Trevor Wood (Scottsdale, Ariz./Chaparral) became the day’s first commitment, picking the Wildcats over scholarship offers from Alabama, Arizona State, Oregon, UCLA, among others. His older brother Carter is a sophomore walk-on offensive lineman for Arizona.
  • UPDATE (6:49 p.m.): The Wildcats received their second commitment of the night from three-star tight end Darrell Cloy (La Habra, Calif./La Habra). Cloy chose the Wildcats over Boise State, Colorado and Colorado State, among others.
  • UPDATE (7:09 p.m.): Three-star cornerback Kwesi Mashack (Norco, Calif./Norco) becomes the Wildcats’ third commitment of the day, picking Arizona over an offer from Hawaii. He also received interest from Boise State, California, San Diego State and UCLA, among others.
  • UPDATE (10:32 p.m.): The Wildcats close out the day with a commitment from three-star safety J.R. Hunt (Chandler, Ariz./Chandler). Hunt chose Arizona over scholarship offers from Arizona State and Montana. USC and Michigan also showed interest in Hunt.

Wide receiver Jalen Brown, offensive lineman Natrell Curtis, wide receiver Kaelin Deboskie, linebacker Jamardre Cobb, linebacker Tyler Cook, wide receiver Jeff Farrar, defensive lineman Jase Franke, linebacker Jabril Frazier, offensive lineman Layth Freikh, linebacker Connor Humphreys, offensive lineman Andrew Mike, offensive lineman Trenton Noller, defensive back Jamal Scott, athlete Marquis Ware, defensive lineman Sharif Williams and defensive lineman Jeff Worthy were some of the other recruits at the event.

Wildcats commits Nick Wilson, Naijiel Hale, Jonathan Haden and Cameron Denson were also in attendance.

Four-star quarterback Brandon Dawkins (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Oaks Christian), who committed to Arizona Thursday, made his pledge early because he knew he would not be able to make it to this weekend’s event. He chose the Wildcats over offers from North Carolina State, Notre Dame and Utah, among others.
