Take a step into the wild side, enter the ZonaZoo

Behind the #1 team in the nation stands the raucous ZonaZoo, Arizona’s student section, filled with 3,000 of the best fans in the country. There’s no denying that there is a true home court advantage as the Wildcats boast an astounding 77-10 regular season home record in the Sean Miller era. Earlier this week, ZonaZoo was named as the #8 college basketball student section in the country according to the College Basketball News Center.

You could say that a school with rich program history, such as Arizona, should have some of the best fans in college basketball, especially considering the fact that the Wildcats have topped the polls for seven consecutive weeks this season. However it’s safe to say that the ZonaZoo has made the McKale Center one of the loudest and most feared places to play in the West.

Everyone wants to beat the #1 team in the country, giving Arizona their best shot. With that being said, it’s not until the final few possessions when the Cardiac Cats pull away with the victory. Arizona is easily one of the most exciting teams in the country and it seems like every minute there is something that gets the ZonaZoo roaring. Whether it may be an alley-oop from TJ McConnel to Nick Johnson, a fierce and-one drive by Rondae Hollis-Jefferson or even a made free throw from Aaron Gordon, the ZonaZoo is sure to make some noise.

This year the ZonaZoo has come out with plenty of new ideas that have received high praise from the media. Filled with over twenty big heads, multiple costumes and over a thousand balloons, the ZonaZoo cannot be tamed once the clock starts. The ZonaZoo has featured the many faces of the Wildcat roster on big heads for quite some time, however this year there are a few new notable additions including a Furbee, Ron Burgundy, Gerald from Hey Arnold, Gollum and a shake weight. Yes, a shake weight.

But what’s a zoo without Zoo Keepers, right? Some of the most spirited fans hold up cue cards after big plays throughout the game to keep the ZonaZoo chants loud and in unison. You’ll also notice a few interesting characters standing in the ZonaZoo such as Gumby, Scream, a Decibull (meter) Dog, Dunkin Donut and ChewBlockA, a wookie that throws socks out in the crowd after every block.

ZonaZoo Tickets have been selling out in less than 30 minutes the past few games for students. But with a lot of cash and a little bit of luck, you might be able to go see the #1 Wildcats and the ferocious ZonaZoo.
