More from Arizona Wildcats

Cross Country

We will start with the most recent season opener and the men’s and women’s cross country teams. Arizona headed up north to Flagstaff to compete in the George Kyte Classic, hosted by Northern Arizona. Both squads finished second in this meet and the women had the meet winner. Arkansas State transfer Kristina Aubert won her first meet as a Wildcat finishing the 6,000 meter course in 14:36.3. She won the meet by over 30 seconds and looked really strong. The Wildcat women had three other runners finish in the top 10, with Kate Penney finishing fourth, Claire Green finishing sixth, and Stephanie Bulder finishing tenth.

As for the men, senior Sam Macaluso was top finisher for the Wildcats, on the 8,000 meter course, finishing fourth with a time of 23:02.3. The other Wildcats to finish were Kenji Bierig and Matthew Beer, who had ninth and tenth place finishes respectively. It was a good first meet for both the men and women and they will look to build off that for their next meet, on September 19th, when they host the Dave Murray Ivitational

Women’s Soccer

Women’s soccer traveled to Tempe this weekend, for two games, in the Sun Devil Classic. The Wildcats got things started Friday night against #6 Texas A&M and played them to a 2-2 draw. Arizona had two one goal leads at separate points this game, but were unable to keep the lead and had to settle for the draw. Things got started in the 38th minute when Gabriela Stoian put one into the back of the net to give the Wildcats the lead. Texas A&M answered in the 43 minute when Bianca Brinson tied it for the Aggies. Scoring was silent until the 84th minute when Arizona’s Hayley Estopare scored to give the Wildcats the late lead. A&M waited until just 33 seconds left, but they tied it up when Brinson put her second goal of the game into the back of the net. The two overtime periods went scoreless and the Wildcats came away with a draw against the number six team in the nation.

Up next was Oklahoma State on Sunday and the Wildcats did not play their best game against the Cowgirls, until the 84th minute when the floodgates opened up. The scoring opened up with a Cowgirl goal on a penalty kick from Allie Stephenson in the 58th minute and than scoring was silent until the 84th minute when Lexe Selman tied the game up at one. The Wildcats were not done though. Under two minutes later Gabriela Stoian scored to give the lead to the Wildcats and than four minutes later she scored again to make it a 3-1 game and a 3-1 win for the Wildcats. A very successful 1-0-1 weekend at the Sun Devil Classic.

The Wildcats football team returned to the field for a Thursday night showdown, at the Alamodome, against the UTSA Roadrunners. It was not a pretty game and it was a very hard fought game, but the Wildcats improved to 2-0 on the season with a 26-23 win. The game started with an 85 yard touchdown pass from Anu Solomon to Cayleb Jones, but that was the last easy play of the game. It was a hard fought battle, but in the end the team with the better players did prevail. Ture freshman RB Nick Wilson finished the day with 174 yards and one touchdown on 30 carries, while Jones finished the day with 143 yards and that one touchdown on four receptions. On defense, safety Jared Tevis and LB Scooby Wright had themselves a ball game.
