Allonzo Trier publicly declared that he would stay in school, not test the waters and not enter the draft, fans are ecstatic!

Allonzo Trier made a decision, and know we are all aware that he will not test the NBA Waters, and, he will not declare for the NBA Draft. No, Zo will continue to have a blast as a student-athlete at the University of Arizona. What could be better than that? And he gets to spend one more year with Head Coach Sean Miller,  a mentor he has established a close relationship with.

Zo has been waiting for his turn to be the Alpha male on the team. The player Miller goes to when he needs leadership.

More from Wildcats Basketball

Do you know anyone who has ever said, ‘I wish I could graduate in two years and start working, enough of pool parties, cheering for my teams, hanging with friends that feel like family, and mostly a carefree life’?

My oldest Wildcat was depressed after she had graduated she missed the campus, the relationships, the football and basketball games, even the heat. Took the better part of a year to get over it and establish friendships back at home in home.

My youngest Wildcat has about a year and a quarter left to be a student, and she doesn’t want it to end because she is having the time of her life.

The point I am trying to make is, why the rush? For Allonzo, he has already been injured, and he recovered. He already suffered through a controversial season, and he lived to redeem himself on the court and off. But he hasn’t yet played for an entire season, and this is his chance to make history, so he took it.

Most people look at the money alone, but money comes and goes, college life and experiences stay with you forever, and no one can take them away from you. A college degree after three years isn’t too shabby either. So many players declare with dollar signs in their eyes but end up playing overseas to make any money.

You can be in your mid-twenties and hear an NBA expert call you washed up, and it’s not pretty, you end up playing video games by yourself in a hotel room wishing you were back in school. That’s what Aaron Gordon eluded too after just a few months after he started playing for the Magic.

Derrick Williams declared for the draft, and there was a lockout. I met him during that time while he was practicing with a bunch of other NBA players at the local high school. Williams was decked out head to toe in Arizona Wildcats gear. Including his kicks. He looked depressed and could barely smile. He didn’t even play well that day.

Things changed, but it wasn’t the best start to an NBA Career.

Plus Allonzo can add awards to his trophy shelf, and make A Players Program history. On top of that.

We asked our staff if they had any opinions on the matter, and this is what they had to say to Zo:

Peggy McClain

Smart move! You will grow in many ways staying another year. (Or two winky face) #BearDown

Eric Townsend

In this day and age, where everyone moves on quickly, it’s amazing to see your competitiveness and drive to show still and prove that you are not finished here. We are truly grateful for everything you have brought to this University and will continue to bring.

You have an amazing opportunity to challenge yourself in news ways and improve to follow your dreams. We wish you the best of luck your junior year and making it the best one yet.

David Rosen:

Zo, you have earned my respect. Making the decision to come for another year I’m sure was a difficult one to make, but the right one. I CANNOT WAIT to see what you have in store next season. The rest of the country better be on high alert because Zo Man is back in town!

Fans on Facebook:

Duane A. Great news! If others would do as he, Cats could get to the top. Coach brings the talent. They just don’t stay!

Frankie M. Proof that Zo has nothing but love for Miller and wants to help him get us to the promised land. We were in great position before this too. Imagine if Rawle and Comanche end up back too.

Andy S. Wow – Alonzo you are already great Wildcat- stud, etc…I can wait for you to be a “legend” while leading this team to the NCAA Championship.

Kathy H. Yes!!!! BEARDOWN!

And from his coach Sean Miller:

NBA scouts look at many things when measuring up draft picks. Potential, athleticism, skills, attitude, drama, maturity and coachability to name just a few. The fact that NBA mock drafts include Zo means that the overall opinion on his viability in the NBA is positive.

Coming back to lead the Cats and proving he can lead a team to the championship (or final four) or just merely playing an entire season and getting the positive attention he deserves for how hard he works, should only help his chances going forward.
