Arizona dominated ASU in all major sports this year, be despite their efforts, still lost the Territorial Cup Series.

The Territorial Cup Series is a year-long competition, based on a point system, and is between Arizona State and the University of Arizona for both men’s and women’s sports.

Each respective sport also has their Territorial Cup in a sense, like Arizona Football who took back the cup this last season.

Here is the official description and point system according to the State Farm Territorial Cup Series website (note: the site hasn’t been updated since 2012):

"Each year, the schools’ athletic departments compete head-to-head in eighteen (18) common, equally weighted, sports to determine which community can claim the bragging rights for that year. The winning school is awarded the Territorial Cup Series Trophy, which was inspired by the oldest rivalry trophy in collegiate athletics.ASU and UA sports teams will compete against one another in 18 common varsity intercollegiate sports. For a school to be the winner of the State Farm Territorial Cup Series Trophy, they must accumulate 9.5 points.– Each sport will be worth one (1) point.– The point is awarded to the team that wins a season series. If the teams play once in a given season (football) then that game counts as one point. For baseball and softball, all regular season games count towards season series tally, including the non-conference games. For swimming and diving, cross country, golf, and track and field only, one point is awarded to whichever team finishes higher in the Pac-10 Championship. (for these sports no other postseason competitions will count towards the series)"

Yes, we will give teeny tiny Kudos to ASU. Overall, ASU won the proverbial Territorial Cup Series in 2016-2017 by one point counting the Wildcats recent Baseball series sweep, 10.5-9.5.

BUT, and this is a huge but, ASU DID NOT win in the major sports such as football, basketball, baseball and softball. Those major sport individual team accolades went to Arizona this year, here are a few:

  • November 4, 2016 – Women’s Soccer – Arizona 1, ASU 0
  • November 25, 2016 – Football – Arizona 56, ASU 35
  • January 12, 2017 – Men’s Basketball – Arizona 91, ASU 75
  • March 4, 2016 – Men’s Basketball – Arizona 73, ASU 60
  • April 28, 2017 – Softball – Arizona 4, ASU 3
  • April 29, 2017 – Softball – ASU 5, Arizona 2
  • April 30, 2017 – Softball – Arizona 8, ASU 0
  • May 18, 2017 – Baseball – Arizona 6, ASU 5
  • May 19, 2017 – Baseball – Arizona 3, ASU 1
  • May 20, 2017 – Baseball – Arizona 9, ASU 5

On top of all that, ASU Football was not invited to a bowl game either and Arizona State Softball lost in their regionals in Missouri. They lost to North Carolina and Ole Miss. In the meantime, Arizona Softball swept their opponents at Hildebrand in the Tucson Regional beating New Mexico State 11-0, and South Carolina 5-0 and 9-0 (yes three shut-outs).

Arizona Basketball went 15-18, another losing season under Bobby Hurley.
