The Arizona Wildcats Softball Team had a great game yesterday, they swept the Oregon State Beavers scoring 22 runs in the last game in five innings.
Arizona Wildcats
It was a foggy day yesterday in Corvallis Oregon, but that didn’t stop the Arizona Wildcats Softball team steamrolled over the Beavers winning 22-3 in only five innings. The No. 12 nationally ranked Wildcats are currently in third place in the Pac-12 with a record of 6-3, and 31-9 overall.
The Wildcats were coming off a disappointing series with their rivals up north (ranked No. 10), losing two out of three games. There are 15 Pac-12 conference games left in the season including No. 7 Oregon Ducks, No. 11 UCLA Bruins, No. 20 Washington Huskies (their next opponent), No. 34 Utah Utes, and No. 78 Stanford Cardinal.
The two teams played a game on Friday and a double-header on Saturday. The Wildcats won game one in the fog for the first couple of innings 9-3 (win to Trish Parks) including six different players hitting home plate. They won game two 7-2 (win to Michelle Floyd see below for more) including seven different players scoring.
It was the third game that sent the Wildcats into the record books, rolling over the Beavers 22-3. In the third game Arizona scored six home runs in two games on Saturday, five of them coming in the second game. Star Chelsea Goodacre drove in eight runs hitting three home runs in the double-header. Eleven different players scored runs, five running the bases three times each!
The most exciting stat of game three is the Grand Slam stat, there were two of them in this game, the first by Katiyana Mauga and the second by Goodacre. In addition, Mandie Perez hit a three run home run. The Wildcats are a powerhouse.
This win was very special for the Wildcats as it was the second time they accomplished this feat since the conference switched to three game stands:
The game was also record-breaking as it was the MOST EVER runs scored in a single game!:
Scoring 22 runs hadn’t been done at Arizona since 1995:
The 6’3″ Sophomore Michelle Floyd had retired 14 of the final 17 batters she pitched to and she allowed only two runs on five hits. Floyd holds a 17-5 record after the win. After the game, the Pac-12 tweeted out that Arizona’s softball team pitcher Michelle Floyd actually taught Rondae Hollis-Jefferson how to shimmy, the jury is out:
