‘Straight Outta Somewhere’ We’ll Clue You In

We are sure by now you have seen a ton of ‘Straight Outta Somewhere’ memes floating around social media, and it is a brilliant promotion idea, but did you know music producer and Former Arizona Wildcat Harvey Mason Jr. is involved with the music in the film?

“Straight Outta Compton” is an upcoming film produced by New Line Cinema, Legendary Pictures and others and will be distributed by Universal Pictures.

Launched a couple of days ago, this brilliant social media promotion tool and meme generator, “Straight Outta [Somewhere]” was being noticed by sports fans everywhere.  Sports Meme’s were popping up on Twitter and Facebook prompting Bleacher Report to report on how sports fans had taken to using the tool for sports. USC is the closest Pac-12 school to Compton, but Trojan fans weren’t the only fans to get into the action

I am dying to know exactly who is the brain child behind this social media campaign who capitalized on the relationship with Dr. Dre’s namesake company which is owned by Apple, Beats By Dre. The tie-in is obvious as the movie is about Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, Easy-E and their band/group N.W.A. Both Ice Cube and Dr. Dre are producers of the movie among others.

The musicians seemed to have understood the concept: ‘type in the city where you come from in the box.’ Not everyone understood, and some of the memes were hysterical and in bad taste, you will have to find those yourselves.

The focus of the movie, which is getting solid positive reviews (92% on Rotten Tomatoes) is based on these artists trials and tribulations, their road from the streets to fame and fortune, what they went through to get there and the eventual break-up of N.W.A. While there has been controversy and mishaps during the production of this film, it will be released this week on August 14th with great anticipation.

USA Today feels that this whole meme generator is out of control.

They may be on to something…

Let’s get back to these sports related memes. I challenged the Pac-12 Fight Club to gather all the related memes using this tool, and they tweeted out the best of them.  First up, the Wildcats fans give it a try.

I saved the best for last…this one was posted on Instagram by Trey Mason who is a sophomore on our Arizona Wildcats Basketball team (No. 44) Trey is such a class act, a great family man, a wonderful brother, and a fantastic teammate to his fellow Wildcats.

Trey’s father is former Arizona Wildcat basketball player Harvey Mason Jr. who played for Lute Olson’s 1988 Final Four team. He is also an extremely talented songwriter and music producer who has won six Grammy Awards to date along with an NAACP Award, a Critics Choice Award and too many other awards and nominations to list.

The Underdogs (Harvey and Damon Thomas) made a deal for an exclusive label with Clive Davis’ J Records, the label’s name is Underdog Entertainment. The Underdogs role on the ‘Straight Outta Compton’ soundtrack is to produce and arrange the ‘new music.’
