Arizona Basketball: Gabe York and Ryan Anderson get their shot in the NBA

Arizona Basketball graduated five seniors last season, but we only heard that Kaleb Tarczewski was signed as an undrafted free-agent, now two more have opportunities.

According to Bruce Pascoe (Arizona Daily Star), “Ryan Anderson has accepted an invitation to join the Orlando Magic in NBA summer-league play while Gabe York will play for Charlotte, according to the agent of both players.”

Both players were invited to play in front of NBA Scouts at the Seniors Portsmouth Invitational Tournament where Ryan Anderson topped the leaderboard with 12 rebounds and made the all-tournament team. Gabe York tied for 6th out of 64 participants in 3-point shots made. This is what these two were known for at Arizona. York went 54-1 at McKale and went to one Sweet-16 and two Elite Eights.

Disheartening to Wildcats fans, not one of Arizona’s graduated seniors made the DraftExpress top 100 NBA Draft list. They were ranked as seniors, however: Kaleb Tarczewski at No. 32, Ryan Anderson at No. 48 and fifth-year senior transfer from San Fransisco Mark Tollefsen at No. 57.

As a fifth-year Boston College senior transfer, Anderson led the Wildcats in scoring (15.3) and rebounding (10.1) last season. In Anderson’s college career he stacked up the following honors:

  • Pac-12 All-Conference 1st Team (2016)
  • USBWA National Player of the Week (2-8-16)
  • Pac-12 Player of the Week (2-8-16)
  • Karl Malone Award Finalist
  • The first Wildcat since Jordan Hill in 2008-09 to average a double-double for an entire season (Averaged 15.3 points and 10.1 rebounds)
  • NABC First Team All-District (2016)
  • USBWA All-District 1st Team (2016)
  • Third-team All-ACC (2013)
  • Honorable mention All-ACC (2014)
  • ACC All-Freshman Team (2012)
  • ACC Rookie of the Week (2-20-12).

Gabe York statistically played his best season last year. He averaged 15 points and came in as the 65th ranked player overall in the 2012 class, according to ESPN. York also hit a McKale record nine three-pointers in the Cats’ 64-61 win. He ranks No. 5 in Arizona all-time 3-point shots made in a college career and ranked No. 1 in the Pac-12 in his senior season with 98.

York tied Salim Stoudamire‘s 2005 record at the McKale Center for most three-pointers made in a game with nine. It happened on Senior night versus Stanford (3-5-2016), he also made the Pac-12 All-Conference 2nd Team (2016). Gabe will always be known for that put-back on a missed free-throw against conference opponent Utah to seal the game.

Some have said his 6-foot-3 build is not desirable for the NBA, but heck there are others his size who have done well so we will see.

Ryan Anderson worked out for the Utah Jazz and Los Angeles Lakers but ended up with the Orlando Magic where fellow Wildcat Aaron Gordon has become a fan favorite. Anderson will play for the Blue team. Notice another Wildcat on Anderson’s team? The two never played together but Nick Johnson is also playing on the Orlando Blue team.

Gabe York worked out for the Sacramento Kings and the Phoenix Suns (how fun would that have been?). He ends up in Charlotte to play for the Hornets. Here is the Hornets Summer League roster:

And we have an update on Kaleb Tarczewski, he will be playing with his former teammate Stanley Johnson with the Detroit D-League team, he was signed by the Washinton Wizards. Earlier we reported that Stan Van Gundy was quoted as saying Stanley wouldn’t play but the tide has turned.

The two were known for chest bumping during the 2016 season; they deserve a chance in the NBA, and they will get it in the Summer League. BearDown Gabe and Ryan! We will be keeping up with you.
