The Game of Thrones has permeated the sports world and social media for quite some time, but now the Pac-12 has picked up some steam in the Throne’s direction.

According to the Nielsen Ratings, 16.5 million viewers tuned into the season finale of season 7 of the Game of Thrones (GOT). I watched the first couple episodes and did not get hooked, so I am in the minority, but I am not alone because a head coach in the Pac-12 is in the same boat.

The Game of Thrones includes battles, murder, lots of murder and killing, sex, dragons, kings, queens and non-human beings. One could analogize that sports also includes most these elements but specifically battles, wizards, kings, and queens. There are also winners and losers, and the saga continues, same as the GOT.

Will USC Football win the South? Will Washington Football rule the North? Will Arizona Basketball reign supreme over all the other Pac-12 teams in the land? We will see!

As for the Arizona Wildcats, Arizona Basketball has its own King. King Rawle Alkins is living the Savage Life, and getting his armies of Wildcats fans to follow his lead.

Arizona Football created a great hype video to open up the football season.

Just the other day, Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham was asked a question on Twitter, fans used the hashtag #AskCoachWhitt. This extravaganza took place on the day of the airing of the final episode of GOT Season seven (episode 7). So since Utah Utes live close to what might resemble a North Wall of ice in the Winter time, some fan decided to ask the coach a GOT question.

The coaches response was classic!

I asked coach Whittingham about his response to a tweet, and it was hard for all of us on the call not to giggle:

[Laughter] Well what was at the time I didn’t know, but The Game of Thrones question, yeah It was Bazar,” explained Whittingham, “I didn’t know what the questioner was getting at or had any idea at or any clue of how to go about answering it, so a couple of questions later I figured it out with the help of my media expert here in-house, and so yeah I apologize for my ignorance, I guess I’m one of the only people in this country that doesn’t follow that show. Wizardry, Dragons, and all that sort of that stuff is just not my deal.

Our UCLA Bruins sister site, Go Joe Bruin, got into the Game of Thrones as well:

Not to be outdone, our USC Trojans sister site spoke about USC Athletics and the Game of Thrones on their podcast Reign of Troy:

Even football players in the NFL locker rooms are discussing the Game of Thrones, especially on the San Diego Chargers where watching GOT is a MUST for the O-Line:

"“On the offensive line, (watching) is required,” center Spencer Pulley says. “We’re always talking about it — what happened, what’s going to happen. People are very intense.”"
