Steve Kerr needs fans help to buy Jersey and tees to help with Lute Olson statue

Only a few days left to help fund the Lute Olson commemorative statue! Get yourself an Arizona Kerr Jersey or Tee! 

Student Books stores vary from school to school. The Stanford, Oregon, Washington and USC books stores are much smaller than Arizona or UCLA’s which is huge in comparison. Believe me, I have been in almost all the Pac-12 student stores.

Arizona Wildcats fans are truly fortunate to have such a wonderfully well-stocked student store with lots of options for Wildcats gear in almost all sports. That said, the store has upped their game recently. If you are a die-hard Star Wars fan as well as a Wildcats fan, they added an entire line of Star Wars related gear.

But the University of Arizona has its own stars. Legends such as the Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr and his legendary Head Coach Lute Olson. The student store just launched a line dedicated to our beloved Wildcat to help with a special statue.

Arizona Wildcats Basketball

To commemorate the 30th anniversary of the 1988 men’s basketball team, the Director of Athletics Dave Heeke announced last week that the university will be purchasing a $300,000 statue of the Arizona Hall of Fame coach. The statue will locate the trophy north of the Jim Click Hall of Champions on the Eddie Lynch Athletics Pavilion Plaza.

To help out with the funding of the statue, Steve Kerr agreed to contribute funds matched by Original Retro Brand through sales of The Steve Kerr replica jerseys and tees available in the bookstore now.

"Kerr has agreed to donate his royalties from the replica-jersey sales to the Lute Olson Statue Fund. In addition, ORB Founder and CEO Marc Herman has agreed to match Kerr’s donation.[Steve Kerr replica jerseys and tees will be sold] exclusively at the McKale Center A-Store from Thursday, Aug. 31 through Sept. 9"

Olson’s Arizona resume is quite impressive:

• In 24 seasons and amassed a 589-187 (.759) record.
• Led the Wildcats to the 1997 National Championship
• Led the Wildcats to four Final Four appearances, 23 consecutive NCAA Tournaments, and 11 Pac-10 titles
• Earned Pac-10 Coach of the Year honors seven times
• Guided Arizona to 20 consecutive 20-win seasons
• At the time of his retirement, was one of only three coaches in NCAA history to record 29 or more 20-win seasons.
• Olson was enshrined in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2002

Well, it’s about darn time, no? The news of the statue was greeted with tons of elation from fans all across social media.

We reached out to the Assistant Director of General Merchandise at University of Arizona Jake Wright to find out more about the Kerr line and the commissioned Lute Olson statue:

“The University of Arizona Bookstores is extremely excited to carry the Steve Kerr line. Lute is a staple of Tucson and the university. The statue is well-deserved and will cement his place as a Wildcat forever,” said Wright. Wright assured us that they’ll continue to sell the shirts in the store after the deadline.
