If you thought the weekend couldn’t get any better, Arizona Rugby adds the cherry on top after beating Cal to win the Pac-7’s Championship!

It is always a great day to be an Arizona Wildcat! It is even greater when we win! On Sunday, just before Arizona Basketball was about to route the University of Maryland Baltimore County, Arizona Rugby was doing some winning of their own.

The Wildcats started the Pac Rugby Sevens Championship sizzling, outscoring its opponents 89-7 on day one of the conference tournament. In game one of the tournament, Arizona took on Stanford, dispatching the Cardinal by a 44-0 final!

Moving on in the tournament, the Wildcats would take on a scrappy USC team in the second game of the day, eventually pacing themselves to a 21-7 victory, advancing to the semifinal round versus UCLA.

In the third and final game of the day, Arizona would use another strong, team effort. Taking an early 12-0 lead, the Wildcats would continue their shutout en route to an impressive, 24-0 win over the Bruins, winning Pool B, and securing a semifinal spot against rival ASU.

Against the Sun Devils, the Wildcats would again use a dominant performance, jumping out to an early lead in this one. Up 19-5, Jonah Eldridge would dart up the sidelines, evading numerous Sun Devils, before diving in for the score.

With the effort, the Wildcats would hold on for the 26-19 victory, earning a spot in the Pac Sevens Championship against the heavily-favored Cal Golden Bears.

On Sunday, against the Golden Bears, the Wildcats were lowly team to stand in the way of Cal winning their sixth-straight Pac Sevens Championship.

Arizona would fall behind early, as Cal came out fighting, taking a 12-0 lead. However, Arizona would respond. The Wildcats would score 12 unanswered points to tie the game!

Both teams would continue to exchange scores throughout this competitive championship game!

With Arizona up 26-19 against Cal, the Golden Bears were in desperate need for a score. Cal’s Elliot Webb would be the one to come up in the clutch, scoring just before time expired, sending the game into a sudden death overtime.

However, on the ensuing kick-off, Cal would make a mistake. The Golden Bears would kick it to the speedy Dante Weeks, and not leaving much coverage help. Weeks would take full advantage of it, taking the ball, finding a seem and running all the way for the game-winning score and championship!

While the win may come as bit of a surprise, it comes in perfect timing for Arizona fans who experienced nothing but winning this weekend!
