Reason No. 2 – Calls can determine outcome of game

This is a HUGE reason why. So many times as fans we want our team to win, and if things don’t go our teams way, we blame the outcome on the referees. We get caught up in the heat of the moment and make look back and realize it was not the referee’s fault our team lost. But sometimes they do have a MAJOR impact on who wins and who loses.

An example of this occurred during the 2017 NCAA Division I National Championship game between the North Carolina Tar Heels and Gonzaga Bulldogs. With the Tar Heels up by one with less than a minute to go, there was a tie-up on the floor between Kennedy Meeks and Silas Melson. Meeks right hand was CLEARLY out of bounds while scrambling for the ball, but the referees did not see it and called a jump ball. Tar Heels would get the ball and on the next possession go up three to secure the championship.

On a big stage for this to happen, in front of millions of viewers all over the world, to witness the referee stand there and not see this call, is just NOT acceptable. Period. Not a good look for the NCAA. What’s it going to take for something to change?! It’s one thing to lose a regular season game, but then to lose a National Championship game because of a missed call. Not cool. Time for a change!
