When you think of dominance when it comes to Arizona Athletics, football, basketball, baseball, and softball are the major sports that come to mind. But women’s golf made a big splash this week. The Arizona Women’s golf team won back to back tournament’s, first the Hawkeye El Tigre Invitational and then the PING ASU Invitational. Also, former Wildcats legend Annika Sorenstam was recognized as one of the ESPN Magazine’s Top 20 Dominant athletes within the last 20 years.
Back to back! Winning one tournament is an accomplishment, but then to come right back and win another one a week later is stellar. That’s what the Women’s golf team did as this past weekend in Tempe in the PING ASU Tournament. They finished the final round shooting a (-12) under par to earn the team win!
In the first round, the ladies shot -3 under par. In the second round, they shot a -1 under par and in the third and final round, they shot a season-low -11 under par to secure the victory. What made this even sweeter is that the host Arizona State Sun Devils finished in last place shooting +2 over par.
Junior Haley Moore came up huge for the Wildcats, shooting a -6 in the final round, coming in 2nd place. Besides the team win, they also came away with individual honors:
While the women’s team was handling business on the collegiate level, one the greatest Wildcat athletes, Annika Sorenstam, was honored by ESPN Magazine. While at Arizona, she had won seven titles, including the NCAA Division One Championship in 1991. That’s dominance right there!
During her reign in the LPGA, Sorenstam won 72 times and won 10 major championships. She also was honored as the female golfer of the year eight times and won countless other awards, such as multiple ESPY best female athlete awards and Associated Press Female Athlete of the year.
ESPN Magazine ranked Sorenstam at No. 6 overall in the Top 20 Dominant list of athletes of the last 20 years. To put into perspective what that ranking means, at No.1 is Tiger Woods and No.2 is Lebron James. Not too shabby at all Annika!
