Arizona Basketball Recruiting: A Miller Miracle

We have all seen it before, and when it happens, it leaves our jaws dropped on the floor. Miracles in sports are spectacles that may never be forgotten. From the 1980’s USA men’s hockey team beating the Soviet Union to win the gold medal all the way to the Arizona Diamondbacks coming back to beat the Yankees in the bottom of the 9th off of Marino Rivera. Now its Tucson’s turn to have a miracle of their own and it is going to go down as the Arizona Basketball “Miller Miracle.”

All Arizona basketball fans are familiar ongoing on going FBI investigation that has put the program between a rock and hard spot moving forward or so it seems. The squeeze might be so tight that it could force a player to go elsewhere and have Sean Miller without a contending team. Then came the early exit out of March Madness due to the restless defense that Buffalo brought to the court. Dick Vitale couldn’t have been more wrong with this Tweet, and the revenge is sweet!

How could a coach and program overcome all of this? All it took was the first domino to fall or the first commitment to the 2018 recruiting class. What seemed like a long, painful wait the first commitment finally came by the name of Devonaire Doutrive, a four-star guard who ranks No. 6 shooting guard in California.

While this commitment easied the pain as fans began to see a light of hope moving forward, it could not hide the fact that the Wildcats only had six scholarships players. Knowing that Miller wasted no time as he again tests his luck overseas and again it came through for him in a commitment from Omar Thielemans.

The Wildcat faithful after the commitment of Omar, now had a little pep in their step. With two commitments under their belt and a group of young talented players returning next year the thought of another return to March Madness did not seem that far out of reach.

With the loss of the likes of Parker Jackson-Cartwright, Dusan Ristic, and Rawle Alkins, the glaring weak spot was the lack of upperclassman on the roster. This fear was soon calmed as Miller pulled a grad-transfer from his home state of Pittsburgh in Ryan Luther.

Not only is Ryan Luther an upperclassman but he also added size to that front line next year. As the talent started to pile up for the 2018 Wildcats basketball team. Who was going to lead this offense next year? Wildcat fans got that question answered yesterday when they saw Justin Coleman a transfer point guard commit to Miller and the Wildcats.

The roster has taken shape, and Cats fans everywhere can exhale as the nightmares, for now, subside.  The “Miller Miracle” continues as we wait on other recruits that could still commit to the Wildcats for next year. Two guys to really keep your eyes on is Brandon Williams and Jordan Brown. Good news for Cats fans is that they both have Arizona in their top three choices.

First comes Brandon Williams who was originally committed to U of A before decomitting due to the FBI scandal that caused so much uncertainty around the program. Even with that being said, Brandon Williams still considers Arizona as a place he could see himself playing at in the upcoming future.

Next comes Jordan Brown, who recently got a lot of push from Sean Miller and his staff as they seek to bolster their roster. Even though the Wildcats got a late jump on Jordan Brown, it is safe to say that they have made a significant impact ever since putting their name into the race.
