Arizona Stadium has this unique ability to have fans in the seats before kickoff all the way up to halftime. Once the start of the second half starts, it is like a magic trick and suddenly the majority of the Arizona fans and students have disappeared. The University has gone in a lot of different directions to try to keep fans in their seats the whole game. Up until this season, nothing has seemed to work, but the University of Arizona has called an “Audible” and has approved the sales of beer and wine at the stadium.
As a student or as a fan, we have all been there. That point when we are sitting out on the mall of the University of Arizona with the smell of burgers and brats on the grill and an ice-cold beverage in our hand. As we get fueled up for another exciting game down in the desert with our beloved Wildcats.
As we cheer on our Cats to victory there comes a time where we need to refuel. We need to get our whistle wet and recharge the engine. For many of us, this happens at halftime as we make our way toward the concourse. Most fans go and grab a hot dog or popcorn to fill their belly but yet something still seems to be missing. Most of the time fans head home in search of another ice cold beverage and end up watching the rest of the game from the comfort of their own couch.
Now that feeling of having something missing will finally be solved. As of today University of Arizona AD Dave Heeke announced that they will start selling beer and wine at all Arizona football games. In return, Dave Heeke would like to see the stadium seats remain filled throughout the whole game.
Not only will this hopefully solve the problem of keeping fans the entire game. It will also add revenue sales as beer and wine figure to be hot sellers. As fans look to take the edge off of the heat created by the sun beating down all day long.
According to USA Today, in 2016 the first year of selling alcohol at Ohio State University they made 1.1 million dollars. While UT Austin made money in stadium sales which was a 70% increase from the previous season.
If the University of Arizona gets the same type of results, it will be yet another step forward in the right direction under AD Dave Heeke. It seems as each day passes, our athletic director is adding something new to our campus or changing something up to only make it better. This can be seen in tickets sales for the upcoming season as the number of season ticket holders has increased at a rapid rate.
Dave Heeke and his staff have gone above and beyond to improve the experience for student-athletes and their loyal fans. Arizona is really changing the game when it comes to college athletics. It has been an exciting ride to this point, and the future only seems to be brighter than ever under his direction.
