WOAH! The NCAA finally did it! They decided that student athletes can not only test the waters prior to the NBA Draft, they can enter the draft and come back to school if they don’t get drafted. The NBA Draft will be flooded with players hoping to hear their name called on draft night. Former Arizona Basketball players did not fare well in the draft as a whole, only one Wildcat was drafted even though the team was able to win the conference championship and were coached by a well respected coach in storied program.

The new policies include:

  • Athletes can make more official visits starting prior to their junior year in high school.
  • Elite athletes can be represented by agents helping them to make informed decisions.
  • Agents must be certified by the NCAA.
  • Athletes may return to school if they are not drafted.
  • Tuition, fees and books should be provided by D1 schools to athletes if they come back to school to complete their degree.

One major reason the NCAA may have made this change is to give incentive to high school athletes to go to college. If the one-and-done rule will be replaced, high school athletes may not be interested in college. But now, they can go to college and enter the draft and go back to school if it doesn’t work out, there will be more incentive for athletes to go to college.

Recruiting will be affected because recruits won’t know whether to commit or not to a school if the school ha players who may come return if not  drafted.

Agents will now have to get certified by the NCAA, but does that mean there will be an entirely new governing body regulating athlete-to-agent dealings and communications on an ongoing bases? We can only imagine the NCAA will be on a hiring spree in order to properly monitor all the schools, athletes, and agents. If they don’t then there will be no guarantee they have solved any problems. Isn’t that how we got in this situation to begin with?
