Arizona Baseball brings in a top 25 recruiting class next year according to  Baseball America.

The smell of popcorn and fresh-cut grass accompanied by the sounds of the ball popping into the glove will soon be right around the corner. As the Arizona Wildcat’s baseball team will look to punch their ticket Omaha, Nebraska this year. As Jay Johnson leads a group of ballplayers that will include eighteen new faces this year.

With the recent success of former Arizona Baseball players in the minor and major leagues, it comes to no surprise that Arizona is a hot spot to play baseball in 2018. Taking full advantage of this helped propel Arizona’s baseball recruiting class which was recently ranked 13th by Baseball America.

It is always a good sign when the players that are committing to play at the University of Arizona are also getting draft by MLB teams. This recruiting class could have been ranked even higher if it were not for two of their top recruits Matthew Liberatore (Rays) and Nolan Gorman (Cardinals) signing their first big league contracts.

Do not worry Wildcats fans, as there is still a collection of studs choosing to play for Arizona Baseball which should lead to a very exciting year for our Cats.

Here are some of the young guns that we should get to know as they will take the field as Wildcats this year.

The first is Austin Wells, a catcher out of Bishop Gorman HS in Nevada. Austin was selected in the 35th round by the New York Yankees but chose to be Wildcat this year. Austin is a left-handed bat with some pop which could lead to some ball leaving the yard in a hurry this upcoming year.

The next guy up is Ian Mejia who is a local of Tucson and currently attends Sahuarita HS where he is a right-handed pitcher. Like Austin, Ian was also drafted by a team in New York but this time it was the Mets who took him in the 34th round of this years MLB draft. Luckily for us, Ian also chose to put on a Wildcat uniform next year.

Sharing the bump with Ian will be another young arm in Bryce Collins who also deals from the right-hand side. Bryce currently attends Hart HS in California where his play also was noticed by MLB teams. Bryce got the call from the Minnesota Twins during this year’s draft but decided to go the college route instead.

There is no doubt that this team has the talent it takes to make it a very special year. There should be a ton of good times down at the ballpark this year in Tucson and the Arizona Baseball team hopes to see you out there. As always GO CATS and BEAR DOWN!
