Arizona Women’s Basketball are on a five game winning streak
By David Rosen
The Arizona Women’s Basketball team is off to great start at 6-1, matching last season’s win total of six, now after winning their fifth straight game.
Five in a row! That’s what the Arizona Women’s basketball team has done this year, winning five, straight games, with their last victory on the road against San Diego State 69-60.
Just like the men’s team, both were able to get a hard fought wins on the road this past weekend. Getting wins during non-conference play is important on many levels, including building confidence and momentum heading into conference play.
Arizona Wildcats
Last season the Wildcats finished with a very humbling, 6-24 record and 2-16 record in conference play. Only seven games into this season, they have matched their win total from last season and are looking to carry on that momentum.
There are still four non-conference games remaining (all winnable), before they face in-state rivals the Arizona State Sun Devils in Tucson on Dec. 30th – circle your calendars for that one!
One of the main reasons for the Wildcats’ success early on has been the stellar play of redshirt sophomore guard, Aari McDonald and five-star recruit Cate Reese. Each has been extremely efficient on the offensive end in their respective positions.
The one-two combination of McDonald and Reese has allowed the team to average 76.7 points per game with the average margin of victory at 23.6 points per game at this point.
McDonald, who was just named the Pac-12 Player of the Week for the second time this year, is averaging 26.5 points per game, to go along with 6.0 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 3.5 steals per game. She is also the second leading scorer in the country!
At 6-feet-2-inches, Reese has been a versatile scorer around the basket, something the Wildcats have been missing for some time. As a freshman, she is averaging 15.4 points per game, she leads the team in rebounding within 9.6 rebounds per game.
Not to go unnoticed is Lucia Alonso, a junior guard from Spain, who rounds out the top three in scoring with 7.7 points per game, averaging almost 42 percent from the arc. Against the Aztecs, she was 5 of 9 from the splash zone!
Right now this team is dialed in on both defense and offense. Winning helps a teams’ confidence and at the same time, builds trust in one another, that as long as they stick to Coach Adia Barnes’ game plan, good things will happen. Right now good things are happening for this team!
Next up are the Montana Grizzlies at home at 11 am on Wednesday, a school day game! At Zona Zealots we are very proud of this team’s success so far and are excited about the future of this program. Bear Down, Arizona!
