Arizona Women’s Basketball (9-1) extends their winning streak to eight games after defeating the visiting UTEP Miners (2-7) on Monday evening.

The Arizona Women’s Basketball team is on a roll! Off to their best start since the 2011-12 season when the Wildcats started the year 11-1, Arizona entered their game against UTEP looking to continue their winning ways.

Already surpassing their win total from last year, this season has been all about getting better, gaining confidence and winning the games that they’re supposed to in order to change the culture.

This season, the Wildcats have been largely led by the successes of Aari McDonald and freshman Cate Reese. However, if Arizona wants to continue their winning ways and build on their current successes, they would need another solid outing against UTEP along with many more.

Coming into this one, the Wildcats would be heavily favored against a struggling UTEP team, and from the tip it was all Arizona.

Quickly, the Wildcats would jump out to a 15-4 lead just eight minutes into the game.

Continuing to build off their dominate offensive performance in the second quarter, Arizona would also use a stifling defense to extend their lead to 38-17 heading into halftime.

Up 21 to start the second half, Arizona would need to continue their strong play in order to come away victorious.

The Miners would do their best to keep things close in the third quarter, but alas Arizona would extend their lead to 27 at 50-23.

Pretty much on auto pilot heading into the final quarter, the Wildcats would ultimately cruise to the comfortable, 62-40 win.

Once again, McDonald would lead the way, scoring 15 points and dishing out nine assists to help deliver the win. Sophomore forward Sam Thomas would add 14 points of her own, converting 4-7 three-point attempts.

Junior guard Lucia Alonso would also finish the game with 13 points, going 3-4 from beyond the arc.

With the win, the Wildcats improve to  9-1 on the year, with just one game left to play before the start of conference play against ASU on December 30.

The Wildcats’ next game will be on Friday when they take on NAU inside McKale Center. Please do your best to come out and support the Cats this season!
