Arizona Basketball: The case for an NCAA Tournament bid
By Jake Faigus
Arizona’s Resume so far is a toss-up of more good than bad, but is it good enough?
Arizona sits at 11-4 and 2-0 in Pac 12 conference play. The first two losses came to Gonzaga and Auburn in Maui, where Arizona looked good for a bit in both games, but it seemed like they just ran out of gas against both teams.
Those losses are very good because Gonzaga (currently No. 5) is going to be hovering around the top-five this season and Auburn (currently No. 11) is going to hover around the top-ten all season.
The Cats Alabama loss was more hurtful than the previous two, but it got better recently because Alabama just beat Kentucky. This helps the Cats resume even more. Alabama is going to be hovering around the bubble all year, so Arizona fans need to pray that they do enough to get into the tournament.
The Baylor loss is indefensible and will be the loss that could have Arizona fans sweating on Selection Sunday. Baylor sits at 92 in the NET ranking and 46 in the BPI. The Bears are 8-5 and have losses to Texas Southern, Stephen F. Austin, and an under-achieving Wichita State team.
The most notable Arizona win is against Iowa State in the first Maui Invitational game that they played. Iowa State was missing three players at the time, but that win could end up being the best win Arizona gets all year.
