As Spring Practice is officially upon us, a few ex-Cats performed well at the annual NFL Pro Day hosted by the University of Arizona.

Football is in the air and as the Wildcats prepare for the 2019 season, a few former Wildcats have already showcased their talent at the annual NFL Pro Day just ahead of the NFL Draft.

Unfortunately, there were no invites to the NFL Combine this season for any Arizona Football player. Instead, nine former Wildcats participated in the events held inside Arizona Stadium on Thursday afternoon.

Those nine players hoping to either improve their draft standing, or at least increase their odds at finding a roster spot were; Layth Friekh, Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles, PJ Johnson, Tony Ellison, Shawn Poindexter, Dylan Klumph, Josh Pollack, Nick Reinhardt and Jake Glatting.

Typically the tests/ events held, arbitrarily measure the skill, size, speed, strength, etc. of each player. Those tests include; the 40-yard dash, the bench press, the three-cone drill, vertical jump, standing long jump, etc.

While all the numbers haven’t been officially released, representatives of all 32 NFL teams were in attendance on Thursday, and a few were seemingly impressed by a couple of our former Wildcats.

Perhaps the one with the biggest day being Poindexter. Coming in, standing an impressive 6-feet-4.5-inches and 212 pounds, Poindexter surely made his presence felt, as he ran drills, even getting some work/ advice from former NFL receiver, Miles Austin.

This past season, Poindexter really elevated his game, putting together a tremendous senior season, totaling 42 catches for 759 yards and 11 touchdowns.

The thing scouts are liking about Shawn is that fact he is still so raw, and has only been playing the sport for a short while. He has decent speed, great size and hands, and a lot of potential at receiver. He could easily be a late round steal should a team make a move on him.

In addition to Poindexter, was DFF. The Tucson native came in at a sturdy, 6-feet-1.5-inches and 205 pounds, and at his frame, Demetrius was still able to clock a rather speedy, 4.57 40-yard dash.

Out of all the Wildcats, he probably helped himself the most! Putting together a workout similar to former Wildcat and current NFL veteran, Will Parks, it’s possible Demetrius could hear his name called come draft day.

Lastly, Johnson had a pretty good day as well. Coming in at just under 6-feet-4-inches and 323 (22 less than his playing weight in 2018), Johnson performed well, doing 20 bench press reps at the 225 testing weight, and ran a 5.07 40-yard dash.

Johnson did seem to struggle at times in the position drills, but could ultimately find a home with an NFL team next year based on his overall size and potential.

Here’s a little recap for the Arizona Pro Day!
