The Arizona Women’s Basketball team is having a very special season and sophomore Aari McDonald is a main reason why.
The greatest or also know as the G.O.A.T, Aari McDonald has a legitimate chance of becoming one of if not the greatest to have played for the Arizona Women’s Basketball team. Now many may not agree with that, that’s fine. This is strictly my opinion, but the way she has played in her first year at Arizona speaks for itself. I am open to hear what your opinion is, but many will probably agree that McDonald can become the G.O.A.T.
Achieving the title of being the greatest requires the stats to back it up. In her first season (which isn’t over yet) McDonald has already surpassed former Wildcat great and current head coach Adia Barnes as the all-time single season leading scorer. She also achieved the milestone of becoming the first player since 2000 to score 800 points, 200 rebounds and 150 assists in one season. Not done yet, just getting started.

She was also named to the AP Honorable Mention All-American team, All Pac-12 team and All Pac-12 defensive team. At one point early in the season she led the country in points per game. McDonald currently leads the team with 24.3 points per game, including eight games in which she has scored 30+ points. Make it rain McDonald!
Not only does she score, she can do so much more. Rebound, assists, steals, plus her quickness makes her an extremely tough guard. At times, she has no problem at all driving the ball all the way down the court through the other team. Blink and you might miss McDonald scoring another bucket.
She just has that special ability to create her own shot and has the confidence to knock it down from anywhere. Even when McDonald’s shots aren’t falling, she looks to get her teammates involved, that’s what makes her such a great teammate, but also so versatile.
Her toughness is also element to her game that makes her a special player. Even being one of the smallest players on the court, she usually takes it to the basket with no fear whatsoever. In today’s game of women’s basketball, where just like the men, women are getting stronger and faster and play at a high level of intensity, which suits McDonald’s style of game perfectly.
The Arizona Women’s Basketball program has seen some greats play for them, including Barnes, Davellyn White, Dee-Dee Wheeler, Ify Ibekwe, Elizabeth Pickney and Shawntinice Polk. By the time McDonald’s career is done at Arizona, she more then deserves to be put in that list of elite women players. She continues to perform at the level she has been, the bar will be set so high may be a while before anyone reaches that level.

At Zona Zealots, we would like to congratulate McDonald on an incredible season, one for the record books! It’s not over yet though as she has chance to secure her play in Wildcat history with a WNIT championship. Bear Down, Arizona!
