Arizona Softball begins Super Regional play versus Ole Miss
TUCSON, AZ- As Super Regional action begins, the Arizona Softball team is ready to battle the visiting Ole Miss Rebels beginning on Friday afternoon!
Survive and advance, that’s the name of the game at this point. For the Arizona Softball team, they will have quite the battle on their hands this weekend when when they take on Ole Miss.
There’s been a drought in the Old Pueblo, and I’m not talking about a lack of rain, no, I’m referring to the Wildcats not having been to the “elusive” College World Series since 2010.
Arizona Wildcats
So close have the Wildcats been to breaking the ‘World Series-less’ streak, but close isn’t the same thing as actually making it. Perhaps that all can change this weekend!
For one, this year has certainly been one of the better Wildcat teams in recent memory. The team has the perfect blend of good pitching and great hitting, two components needed to compete for championships.
Perhaps even more fitting, is that the Wildcats will be playing this weekend inside the “new” Rita Hillenbrand Memorial Stadium. What better way to break in the newly renovated stadium, by getting back to the College World Series?
However, they first must get through a tough, Ole Miss club!
The Rebels enter the series as the overall No. 11 seed, after getting through a tough regional that included Chattanooga, Louisiana-Lafayette and Southeast Missouri.
With a record of 41-18, the Rebels have certainly played a tough schedule, with some very talented teams being in the SEC, but nonetheless, I don’t see them being intimated by the Wildcats or the big stage this weekend.
Largely led by their stellar pitching staff, Ole Miss will likely lean on their aces Brittany Finney and Molly Jacobsen in this series. It’ll be interesting to see how the Cats respond!
One thing we know, is the the Cats have one of the best offenses in the country and will try to use that to their advantage this weekend.
In the regionals, the Wildcats outscored their opponents by an average score of 6.3 to 1.67 runs. Hopefully, they can continue that dominance!
Game one starts on Friday afternoon at 4pm MST/ 3pm PST on ESPNU!
Listen to head coach Mike Candrea, as he talks about the Cats’ upcoming match up and the unfortunate College World Series drought his squad has had.
At Zona Zealots, we’re excited about the return of Arizona Softball and hope the Wildcats can finally end the drought! As always, Bear Down, Arizona!
