It wasn’t the ideal night for Former Wildcat Brandon Randolph on NBA Draft Night, but nonetheless, he will have an opportunity this summer!
It’s never easy making it into the Top 60 picks of the NBA Draft, but nonetheless, former Wildcat Brandon Randolph had huge aspirations when he declared for the draft just weeks ago!
Coming in, it was likely going to tough for Randolph, but heck guys like KaDeem Allen, Grant Jarrett, etc. were drafted, perhaps it was feasible for Randolph to be as well!
Arizona Wildcats
After all, this past season as a sophomore, Brandon finished the year averaging 12.4 points, 3.3 rebounds and 1.0 assists per game!
The thing to like about him, is his potential! Standing at 6-feet-6-inches and 175 lbs., Randolph is the type of player with plenty of upside that could certainly put on a bit more size at the next level.
Also, he certainly showed flashes this past season, showing to be a more-than-capable scorer when called upon, and possessing some amazing athleticism.
However, where he lacked was his true shot creation, and overall, being just an average shooter. Combine that with Arizona having a down year (less exposure), and the league transitioning towards having elite shooters, the obstacles were too great to overcome.
So, on Thursday night when 60 names were called, and not one of them was Brandon Randolph’s, I’m sure there was some disappointment.
While that may come as a tough reality for him, there is at least a silver lining for our Wildcat! As you may recall, Arizona has had a couple players find some recent success via the undrafted route.
Look no further than TJ McConnell landing with the Philadelphia 76ers, and being a solid role player on a team that values his hardwork, attitude and tough play over these past few years.
We also can’t forget about Allonzo Trier who put together a tremendous rookie season! Plus, Rawle Alkins showed flashes of brilliance, for a player who only appeared in 10 games with the Chicago Bulls, putting up a season high 11 points, eight rebounds and three assists versus the Washington Wizards!
For Randolph, he will get his chance with the Minnesota Timberwolves, as the soon-to-be NBA rookie signed a Summer League deal with them.
He will definitely have his work cut our for him, but hey, anything is possible, and if he wants it badly enough and plays well, the sky is the limit!
At Zona Zealots, we’re thankful for Brandon’s time here and wish him the best as he pursues his professional basketball dreams! As always, Bear Down, Arizona!
