Arizona Baseball adds three late additions to the class of 2019
Making a few late roster moves to the class of 2019, the Arizona Baseball team has added three more players to their recruiting class.
As we all saw last year, the 2019 season wasn’t the most memorable one by any means for the Arizona Baseball team. However, there was plenty of talent and upside to be hopeful for the future!
If there is one thing we’ve learned under head coach Jay Johnson, it’s that he can recruit some darn good talent. The major drawback though, is recruiting at that high of a level, means we can expect multiple players that leave early or never make it to campus every year.
Arizona Wildcats
This past MLB Draft, we saw six Wildcats drafted (all electing to go Pro), and saw three additional commits get selected and signed with their respective clubs. That’s quite the hit for the Cats.
Luckily, they have a lot of talent incoming and returning, but that doesn’t mean Arizona and Johnson should take their foot of the gas.
No, instead, Johnson has been busy this off-season, aggressively trying to find and add talent to help fill out his roster… especially at pitcher.
It is no secret that poor pitching is ultimately what Arizona struggled at the most last year, and essentially doomed them from making the postseason.
This recruiting cycle, their are a LOT of arms! According to Perfect Game, the Wildcats have six pitchers incoming!
Luckily, their recruiting isn’t done either! As of Monday, Johnson had alluded on social media, that good news would be coming, and boy was he right!
The Wildcats have added three, late additions to the class of 2019, and those future Cats are;
- OF Mac Bingham (Torrey Pines HS – San Diego, CA)
- RHP Wesley Scott (Woodcrest Christian HS – Riverside, CA) *One-time Vanderbilt commit
- RHP Davis Vainer (Alabama) *Vainer is a transfer

Good to see some arms on that list, and some rather good ones at that!
So what’s to like about these guys? Well, let’s take a look! This past season, Bingham showed some great power finishing the year batting .387 with six home runs, 11 doubles and 18 RBI’s.
As for Scott, he’s a big arm, with HUGE potential! This past year at Woodcrest Christian High School, Scott finished the season with a 6-1 record and 0.98 ERA, meanwhile striking out 85 batters in 50 innings pitched. Now that’s what I’m talking about!
With the addition of Vainer, the Wildcats are getting one heck of an experienced pitcher that should greatly help shore up the Arizona bullpen!
This past season at Alabama, Vainer appeared in 17 games, pitching in 29 and two-third innings. Over that stretch, Vainer compiled a 1-1 record while earning a 3.34 ERA. Additionally, he struck 43 batters, surrendered just 11 earned runs on 18 hits and held opposing batters to a team-low .173 batting average.
Either way, we’re just excited to see talent coming in, and hope it can lead to better results in 2020!
At Zona Zealots, we’re excited to see Johnson being aggressive in recruiting and is trying to turn Arizona Baseball around quickly! As always, Bear Down, Arizona!
