Arizona Football gets steamrolled by the Trojans in Los Angeles
LOS ANGELES – Facing a depleted and dejected USC team, the Arizona Football team travels to ‘The Coliseum’ and gets blown out by the Trojans.
Hoping to rebound from their loss to Washington last week, the Arizona Football team was looking to bounce back in their showdown with the USC Trojans.
It’s never easy getting a win against the Trojans. Disregard that the team was 3-3 coming into this one, as they are the more supremely talented squad.
Arizona Wildcats
On Saturday night at ‘The Coliseum’ that couldn’t be any truer as the Wildcats looked over-matched and over-powered in their 41-14 loss to the Trojans.
Starting out, things did not look good. Arizona’s offense was stagnant, unimaginative and looked like they no business being on that field.
Their six offensive series in the game went as follows; punt, missed field goal, fumble, punt, punt and punt. That’s also not including the muffed punt return in their as well, which led to USC’s first points of the game, a field from 31-yards out.
In the first half, the Wildcats could muster just 106 yards of offense, behind some poor decision making by Khalil Tate, but more indicative to the Wildcats’ struggles was the poor play by the offensive line. Arizona couldn’t get time to throw.
Somehow, the team was just down 17 points despite the ugly play, mistakes and turnovers.
That’s when the second half started…
Looking to find a way to get out of this hole, things would just go down hill from that point. Arizona would get the ball and go a quick, three-and-out.
Then in came the true freshman Grant Gunnell, who would throw an interception on his first drive, which would lead to another Trojan field goal to make it 20-0.
Hoping to find some kind of life offensively, things wouldn’t get any better, as the Wildcats would go punt, punt and then have a missed field goal, leading to another Trojan score, pushing their lead to 34-0.
With a little over 13 minutes to go in the game and the lead steadily in hand and many of the Trojans back-ups in, Arizona would finally find the endzone, going three plays for 70 yards, capped by a Brian Casteel pass from 56-yards out from Gunnell to make it 34-7.
Not but a few plays later, USC would score again, going 75-yards in seven plays to make it 41-7.
After a turnover on downs, Arizona would later get the ball again with a little over two minutes to play, driving and scoring their second touchdown with 28 seconds left. Another reception to Casteel from Gunnell.
Luckily, Arizona was able to avoid the shutout, scoring ‘garbage time’ points, but overall the 41-14 loss was a performance to forget, that’s for sure.
With the loss, Arizona now falls to 4-3 (2-2) on the year, and have a match-up with Stanford looming, which has the possibility of being much like this performance.
If Arizona is to get things corrected, it needs to happen fast otherwise this team may very well win just one more game at most.
At Zona Zealots, we still love our Wildcats and are very disappointed in the poor offensive performances the last two games. Here’s to hoping things can be corrected. As always, Bear Down, Arizona!
