Should Arizona Football turn to their future in Grant Gunnell now?
It’s mass hysteria in the world of Arizona Football fandom, as the Wildcats losing streak extends to three games, and fans are calling for the start of a new era.
It has been a long, few weeks for the Arizona Football fan base, as the Wildcat losing streak extends to three games after the loss to Stanford on Saturday.
What a difference just three weeks makes. Arizona was 4-1 (2-0), fresh off a win over Colorado in which Khalil Tate played great, and leaving some Cats fans confident that this team may have turned it around a bit.
Arizona Wildcats
Alas, insert three really talented teams in Washington, USC and Stanford, and the Wildcats and its fan base has come crashing down to Earth.
A once promising start, Arizona now sits at 4-4 (2-3) on the year, and are in a tough spot to make a bowl game.
And I know the results of recent have left fans indifferent and a bit divided over who is to blame. “Oh it’s Tate’s fault, no it’s the defense, no it’s the coaches, blah blah blah…”
At the end of the day, it’s a team game, and ultimately, it’s Arizona that hasn’t played well enough to get it done the last few weeks.
Look, I’m not so naive as to say Tate is impervious to criticism here, or that he has played amazing. At the end of the day, all players have their limitations, and mistakes are to be expected, Tate included.
What I will say is, you shouldn’t be putting your QB in a position to where he needs to play perfect or damn near close to it in order to win. It’s a team game, and if Arizona is to be successful, they can’t give up 30-40 points and expect to win.
Or does no one remember the Nick Foles years? Even when we had our programs best quarterback, we still weren’t winning a lot of games. Why? Because you can’t expect one player to be the difference in a program that takes 11 players on any given side of the football.
Also, at this point Arizona’s chances of making a bowl game are slim. Anyone suggesting that we should start Grant Gunnell now and prepare for the future I think is pretty foolish.
He’s had reps, his redshirt is burned, use a two QB system if need be, but sitting Tate is a huge slap in the face to the senior who has done nothing but represent the program in a first-class manner, has already graduated and stuck by the program, despite having the opportunity to transfer if he really wanted during a coaching transition.
At the end of the day, Tate is what he is, but it still doesn’t change the fact that he will be one of the most, highest producing quarterbacks in school history (purely on stats). Benching him does nothing, and to me gives a bad perception.
Anyways, at Zona Zealots, we’re just as frustrated as the next fan with losing, but I think perspective is in order. As always, Bear Down, Arizona!
