Arizona Football is over matched in loss to No. 7 Oregon
EUGENE, OR – Arizona Football (4-6, 2-5) drops its fifth-straight game of the season after falling to No. 6 Oregon (9-1, 7-0) by a 34-6 final.
We knew coming into this one it was going to be a tough game, as the Arizona Football team was looking to end their losing streak against a very good Oregon Ducks squad.
Grant Gunnell got the start here, but it ultimately didn’t matter who played as the Wildcats couldn’t muster much offense in this one, coming up short in the 34-6 loss.
Arizona Wildcats
Coming in, the Wildcats were ranked No. 12 in total offense, averaging just over 495 yards, and 41st overall in scoring offense with 32.9 points per game. The only thing was, is that Oregon had one of the nations best defenses coming into this one.
On Saturday, the discrepancy in talent, size and athleticism between the squads was clearly on display, especially as Arizona would also suffer by having a few key injuries along the offensive line.
It didn’t take long for the Ducks to take control in this one, as Justin Herbert would find Johnny Johnson III on a blown coverage on just the second offensive play of the game.
A few series later, they would extend their lead to 14-0 after the Ducks completed a 76-yard drive capped by a touchdown run from Cyrus Habibi-Likio.
But after another unsuccessful offensive series, Gunnell would be pulled for Khalil Tate, who wouldn’t do much on the first drive.
Still trailing 14-0, Oregon would find the end zone again, this time with a little trickery, as Herbert would send a flea flicker pass 53-yards to Juwan Johnson to make it 21-0.
Needing to get some kind of offense going, Arizona would get points on back-to-back drives, scoring two field goals from Lucas Havrisik from 23 and 42 yards to make it 21-6 at the half.
Hoping to make some adjustments, Arizona would fight in the second half, but unfortunately the offense couldn’t find a rhythm with either Tate or Gunnell, being held scoreless in the second half.
Oregon would find the end zone two more times in the second half, one on a pass from Herbert to Spencer Webb from 24 yards with 7:32 left to play in the third, and later on a 33-yard pass to Travis Dye with 10:02 left to go in the game.
Arizona would make a few more attempts to try and rally and keep this somewhat close, but it just wasn’t enough, as the Wildcats came up short, falling to the Ducks by a 34-6 final.
With the loss, Arizona now falls to 4-6 (2-5) on the year, and things don’t get any easier either with No. 7 Utah (9-1, 6-1) coming to town.
At Zona Zealots, we’re hoping the Cats can just end this thing on a high note and try and gain some momentum back. As always, Bear Down, Arizona!
