Approaching National Signing Day, the Arizona Football team gained a commitment from three-star linebacker, Derick Mourning.

We’re in crunch time for the Arizona Football team, and with the Wildcats soon approaching Signing Day, they luckily have picked up another commitment for 2020. This time, it’s three-star linebacker, Derick Mourning.

Hailing all the way from Katy, TX, Mourning is a lesser known recruit in the class, but comes in with plenty of upside and potential. So much potential in fact, that the Wildcats offered a scholarship just days ago.

Well this weekend, Mourning officially visited Tucson this past weekend and has since decided to commit to the Wildcats, announcing his commitment via social media.

With the addition of Mourning, he now becomes the 17th commitment in the class of 2020, and he’s a rather solid get for the Cats.

While the Texas linebacker currently holds offers from Louisiana-Monroe, Tulsa and Sam Houston State, disregard the offers, I do think Mourning is a solid get for the Cats.

For starters, he helps bolster this linebacker group that will desperately need help following the 2020 season. If you were aware, Colin Schooler, Tony Fields II and Anthony Pandy will be seniors this year, and that leaves three huge holes for 2021 and beyond.

Bringing in depth now is going to be hugely important for Kevin Sumlin and the Wildcats!

So why do we like Mourning? Well for one, he’s got great size for a linebacker and at 6-feet-3-inches and 210 pounds that alone should excite fans. Arizona’s average linebacker size is 6-feet-0.5-inches and 227 pounds, by comparison, USC’s linebackers average 6-feet-2-inches and over 228 pounds.

In my opinion, bigger linebackers/ increased size on defense is absolutely needed for the Wildcats.

Also, from his film, you can clearly see why there’s plenty to be excited about when it comes to Derick.

Derick is an aggressive player who plays with a lot of tenacity and with a great motor! He’s a relentless pursuer of the football, showing great vision when attacking the football and is able to finish off opposing offensive players with some brutal hits.

He is a player that can pack on more muscle and size and still be highly effective! His raw potential is through the roof, and that should make Arizona fans happy!

At Zona Zealots, we’re excited for the addition of Derick and can’t wait to see who else the Wildcats bring in the next week or so! As always, Bear Down, Arizona!
