Arizona Football wraps up their recruiting class for 2020 on National Signing Day
National Signing Day is here yet again, and as the Arizona Football team has all but finished their recruiting class for 2020, we bring you our breakdown.
It has been a whirlwind of events for the Arizona Football team over the past few months now, starting with the firing and hiring of numerous assistants. While those personnel decisions have certainly made an impact in recruiting, the show must still go on for Kevin Sumlin, especially on National Signing Day.
If you have been paying attention, you would have noticed that things have been sort of up and down for the Wildcats on the recruiting front.
Arizona Wildcats
To recap, so far in 2020 the Wildcats’ class has been sort of mediocre to say the least. As it stands, the Wildcats have the 64th rated class in the country, which that ranking unfortunately puts the Cats in last place in the conference as well.
Despite the Arizona’s late push in the 2020 class, overall this recruiting cycle been pretty lack luster.
Just looking at it, there’s no doubt that having back-to-back losing seasons certainly hasn’t helped. To make matters worse, there was also some chatter leading up to and following the ASU game, that Sumlin could be potentially let go, which of course will never help with recruiting efforts.
Nonetheless, Arizona has seemingly still managed to get a few solid pieces in the class, addressing some needs on defense as well as along the offensive line and at receiver.
With that said, we recap Arizona’s Official Signings for the class of 2020!
Arguably the crown jewel in the class, Frank Brown is a fantastic get for the Cats and one fans should be happy the Arizona was able to hold on to.
One of the better running backs in the class of 2020, he’s a very solid addition, picking the Wildcats over offers from Baylor, Michigan State, Arkansas, Boise State, etc.
He is an incredibly versatile player, and one that can be just as effective as a back running the football, as he is coming out of the backfield and being a dangerous offensive weapon in the open field.
This past season, Brown appeared in just 10 games for the Raiders, rushing for 848 yards on 62 carries (13.7 average) with 15 touchdowns. Additionally, he added another 1,104 yards receiving with 42 receptions (26.3 average) with another 15 touchdowns!
Just take a look for yourself!
Adding another running back in the class of 2020, Arizona has showed these past two seasons that they like to use a stable of running backs, and so far in this class, Arizona got two good ones in both Jalen John and Brown.
Coming in, Jalen is a bit similar to Frank, and together, the both are absolute play makers.
Jalen’s strengths though tends to be between the tackles. As a junior, he rushed for over 1,300 yards on 165 carries (7.89 average) with 16 touchdowns, and shows value as a pass catcher as well, adding another 170 yards receiving on 13 receptions with two touchdowns! Now that’s some solid production.
Jalen is shifty, he’s got power and has good open field speed. In essence, he is that perfect trifecta as a running back and a player that certainly helps bolster this class!
Here are Jalen’s highlights from his Junior season!
One of the higher rated recruits in the state, Regen Terry was a very important recruit for the Wildcats.
Deemed to be a solid edge rusher, he’s a big kid with a big frame that can feasibly add more size as well. Regen has upside, but now it’s a matter of him living up to the hype. Should his game translate to the next level, he’s going to be a good football player.
Just by watching his film, Regen oozes potential. He has the size, he has athleticism, and all the things you could want in an edge rusher to be successful at the next level.
To me, he is one of Arizona’s more important recruits, and the film speaks for itself!
Another unsung player in the class of 2020 is California-based defensive end, Dion Wilson. Standing at a towering, 6-feet-5.5-inches and 260 pounds, Dion is one of the most physically mature and ready defensive players and it’ll be interesting to see how his game translates at the next level.
Dion certainly has a lot of upside, and while at Orange Vista, that was certainly on display. According to Maxpreps, Dion appeared in eight games, totaling 26 tackles (14 solo), with 10.5 being for a loss, in addition to his 2.5 sacks.
His size and athleticism will surely help bolster Arizona’s defensive line, and just by watching his film, there is plenty to like here!
The only signal caller taken in the class, Will Plummer is one of the nations better quarterbacks, and also one of the best players in the state of Arizona.
Considered a pro-style quarterback, Will really is more versatile than just standing in the pocket and throwing, as he also shows himself to be a very capable runner.
With the loss of Khalil Tate, Grant Gunnell most assuredly becomes the starter at QB, but depth will still be immensely important for the Cats. It’s likely Plummer will redshirt, but nonetheless, having a capable stable of quarterbacks is extremely important.
Plummer has a strong arm, he moves well in the pocket and can make the big throws. He will need to improve on some things, so his development will still happen, but the kid has a lot of potential!
One of the few defensive backs taken in this class, the Culver City athlete Khary Crump is a good one folks! Rated a three-star prospect and one of the Top 100 players in the talent rich state of California, there is a lot to like about this kid.
For starters, his offer sheet is impressive, and the Cats holding on to him speaks volumes. In addition to Arizona, Crump had offers from Oregon, Oregon State and BYU among others.
Khary has good size, with the ability to get bigger, but his athleticism is what many should be coveting.
He’s a solid cover corner and put up some nice stats while at Culver City, and with him coming to Tucson, he will definitely provide much-needed depth in the secondary!
Just take a look at his film yourself!
One of the more college ready players coming in, it was apparent Sumlin wanted more depth and size at receiver, and Majon Wright addresses that.
A big kid out of Florida, Wright has the size, speed and athleticism to be successful. Mostly a two-way player at Cardinal Gibbons High School, he will most assuredly player receiver with the Wildcats and that’s a good thing.
He has talent, and I would assume Majon will get a chance to compete for early playing time. Based on his film, the kid has good hands, solid body control and does a great job at getting to the high point of the football.
Should he play next season, he’s going to be a nice option for the Cats!
It’s not often Arizona takes centers, but if you have the chance to take a player like Josh Baker, you do it!
Personally, I think he will end up being one of the better players in the class for Arizona, but he already has great size and strength, and shows the versatility to not only play at center, but also along the interior line as well.
Josh is a strong kid who excels both in run and pass blocking, he has quick hands and packs a lot of power, showing the ability to pancake his opposing players.
He loves contact and it shows, and with him at center, I think he could be a good one for the Wildcats!
One of the more unsung recruits in the class of 2020, Derick Mourning is one of the newer commits for the Cats and boy is Arizona lucky to have him. Rumored to initially have some grade concerns, that is why Mourning flew in under the radar, and the Wildcats are fortunate to get him.
A big frame with big upside, what more could you ask for from a linebacker?
He plays with tenacity, has a terrific motor and seemingly makes the big play! Derick is a very solid football player and one that Arizona fans should be particularly excited about!
Just by watching his film, the kid oozes talent!
One the the bigger surprises in the class, the Wildcats were able to flip Texas corner Edric Whitley from UNLV to Arizona. A three-star recruit for 2020, Edric is a speedster corner with solid size and coverage skills.
Holding offers from Ole Miss, Miami and UNLV among others, this is definitely a nice pick up to replace the now de-committed Alphonse Oywak.
Also a track star at Weiss High School, Whitley will provide some coveted speed in the secondary for the Cats. He is a very solid coverage corner and is an absolute ball hawk.
This past season, Edric had 32 tackles, 15 pass break-ups, two forced fumbles, five interceptions with three returned for a touchdown!
This is a nice surprise for Arizona and just take a look at his film!
Hailing all the way from Canada, Leif Magnuson is one of the lesser known recruits in the class, but he is one we like quite a bit!
For starters, Leif has a good frame, with good size and from his film he moves well. He’s strong, plays aggressive and a bit with a nasty streak, which are all qualities you could ever desire in an offensive lineman.
Leif explodes off the line of scrimmage, making great initial contact, but where he tends to excel is in run blocking. He shows good footwork, staying on the balls of his feet and never getting too flat footed, which helps him to create more leverage.
He has active feet, which he keeps moving which then allows him to drive his opponent and finish blocks well!
Another player from the great state of Florida, Woody Jean is a standout athlete at the talented Deerfield Beach High School and is another offensive lineman in the class of 2020 for Arizona.
Coming in, there’s a lot of things to like about Jean, starting with his size. In football, you can’t teach size and athleticism, both things Woody has. Additionally, he’s strong and moves well, which are great skills to have as an offensive lineman. From his film, he tends to excel more in pass blocking, but does a solid job finding his man and burying them in run blocking!
He sometimes can play a little tall, but makes up for it with good footwork, and overall possesses good, raw blocking abilities! With a little polishing, he can make for a solid offensive lineman, and one the Wildcats should be happy about!
Just take a look at the Wildcats will be able to work with!
One of the more unknown players in the class, I do think the Wildcats got a steal in Roberto Miranda. Hailing all the way from Germany, some feel Roberto is more of a tight end, but really he’s kind of a nice hybrid player.
He is incredibly versatile, as his team in high school would line him up in a number of different ways, and you can tell they like to get him in space where he is actually a pretty solid runner.
Roberto moves extremely for a player his size, and it’ll be interesting to see the Wildcats’ plan for him at this level.
Either way, you got to like his size and versatility we are surely intrigued with the addition of Roberto!
Just see for yourself!
A standout in the great state of Arizona, Dyelan Miller is the third receiver committed to the Wildcats in the class of 2020.
It is apparent Sumlin and the Wildcats were looking for more size, and Miller also addresses that here. Joining both Miranda and Wright, Dyelan is 6-feet-3-inches and 190 pounds.
As a player, he uses his length to his advantage, attacking the high point of the football, and can use his length to extend and aide the quarterback in getting the ball to difficult spots.
While he’s not the fastest receiver out there, he definitely has separation speed and shows good explosiveness off the line. He is agile, he shows great hand strength, and when in the open field, good luck in catching Dyelan, because it’s probably not going to happen.
He is a nice player and one that certainly helps to bolster the depth at receiver.
One of the better steals in the class of 2020 has been Louisiana-based linebacker, Jabar Triplett. Hailing from SEC country, any time you can get a kid like Jabar despite him having offers from Oklahoma State, Texas Tech and Louisville among others, you have to consider that a big recruiting victory.
Jabar is an exceptional talent and the kids simply makes plays in the open field. He’s very quick horizontally, showing great ability to cover a lot of ground between the sidelines. Additionally, he is a relentless pursuer, able to read the ball well and react instinctively.
Great at tackling in the open field, if given the chance, he will punish the ball carrier in a big way, packing a lot of power in his hits. Jabar can fill up a stat sheet very quickly, and for a linebacker, he just makes plays, which is exactly what you want!
Take a look at his junior highlights!
One of the biggest players in the class, Shontrail Key is an important defensive prospect that stans a massive 6-feet-7-inches and 250 pounds. Shontrail moves really well for a player his size, where is absolutely explodes off the line of scrimmage, being able to get into the backfield quickly.
He has a great motor, pursuing the football well and absolutely punishes opposing players.
He’s big, he’s going to provide immediate depth and the Cats would do themselves a major favor to find more guys like Key!
The only junior college player taken in the class, Stacey Marshall, Jr. When the Wildcats lost the commitment of tight end Drake Dabney, it was apparent they wanted to replace Drake.
He’s one of the most physically ready to make an impact, and just by looking at him, Stacey is a big, athletic tight end that moves well for a guy his size and really does a few things quite well!
Stacey shows he isn’t afraid to go up and get the football, his size lends him to be a nice target, leveraging his body to catch some tough football’s, and he’s also a very solid blocker, showing good physicality in his blocks!
Just watch for yourself!
Tyler Loop is a nice get for the Cats, and he is currently ranked as one of the top kickers overall in the nation, and has a big leg to back-up his talent.
He has great range and accuracy, and last December (2018), Loop won the field goal and kickoff portion of the Texas Showcase for kickers!
Arizona will need to replace kicker Lucas Havrisik and it was apparent that they wanted to address that in this class. Tyler has talent and the leg to boot and should he continue to develop, Arizona got a solid one here.
At Zona Zealots, we’re excited for the new Wildcats officially joining the Arizona Family and can’t wait to see what they do at the next level! As always, Bear Down, Arizona!
