Arizona Football adds Greg Burns to replace Coach Meat
With Arizona Football also feeling the affects of Corona Virus, the Wildcats have finally replaced Coach Meat, with the hiring of Greg Burns!
It’s been one hell of an off-season so far. From new hires, transfers, Corona Virus and so on, there hasn’t been a shortage of headlines for the Arizona Football team. The latest headline of course being Greg Burns.
Who? We will get to that shortly, but in case you hadn’t been paying attention, the Wildcats were in desperate need of a new defensive backs coach, with the departure of Demetrice Martin (aka Coach Meat) just a few weeks ago.
Arizona Wildcats
With Meat leaving for Colorado, that left a huge gap on the defensive staff for Arizona, especially as the Wildcats will now have had to replace every major position coach along the defense.
If you may recall, Arizona has now had to replace Marcel Yates, Iona Uiagalelei, John Rushing and most recently Meat.
With those departures, I feel it really shouldn’t be seen as quite a bad thing. Just for our recollection here, the last two seasons this defense has finished; 98th and 118th respectively. Perhaps a change from top-to-bottom was in order after all.
So to reiterate, Yates was replaced by Paul Rhoads, Stan Eggen replaced Uiagalelei, Andy Buh replaced coach Rushing and now Greg Burns is replacing Coach Meat.
On paper, this looks like a good hire, and here’s why:
- He’s a younger coach (47)
- He has over 20 years of coaching experience… all at defensive back
- He has playing experience (former player at Washington State)
- He has West Coast ties, and more importantly Pac-12 ties
- Coached at USC (2002-05, 2019)
- Coached at ASU (2008-11)
- Coached at Cal (2014-17)
- Coaced at OSU (2018)
- And according to USC’s website, Burns has coached numerous NFL players including; Troy Polamalu, Terrell Thomas, Darnell Bing, Will Poole, Eric Wright, Kevin Thomas, Cary Harris, Kevin Ellison, John Walker and William Buchanon
That is quite the pedigree, and from Arizona’s point of view, this is a fantastic hire!
The only bummer, is that with Spring Football being cancelled due to the Corona Virus, Burns won’t get the opportunity to implement his terminology and coach his players!
Either way, when the Wildcats DO return to action, this will be a solid hire to hopefully get immediate results.
At Zona Zealots, we’re excited for the addition of Coach Burns and can’t see what he can do here in Tucson! As always, Bear Down, Arizona!
