With the Wildcats in the midst of a busy off-season, the Arizona Football team got some bad news as safety Scottie Young, Jr. announced he will transfer.

Roster turnover and attrition is a never ending battle for any college football program, especially for the Arizona Football team, as the Wildcats constantly battle with it every year. The most recent player to announce his departure from the team is Scottie Young, Jr.

Yes, the three-year safety who was No. 4 in tackles on the Cats this past season took to social media to announce his intent to enter the transfer portal on Thursday afternoon.

Finishing this past season with 66 tackles (50 solo), 2.5 tackles for loss, three pass deflections and an interception, the departure of Scottie is a sizable one.

I know he may have had his struggles last season defensively, just as numerous other Cats did as well, but he would have nonetheless been a senior safety this year. Scottie has plenty of playing experience that would have been incredibly beneficial to the Wildcats.

The interesting thing to note is why transfer now so late in his collegiate career? Was there a difference in defensive coaching styles that he wasn’t meshing with? Or was it the switch of schemes on defense that might provide more competition for him?

Who knows, and it’s not really fair to speculate on the decision on why Scottie decided to transfer, we can only wish him the best. One thing we do know is even with his mistakes early in his collegiate career, he came back, he battled and was a crucial player on the defense last season. Arizona will miss him in 2020.

As it stands, here’s who the Cats currently have at Safety on the roster now; Jarrius Wallace, Christian Young, Jaxen Turner and Rhedi Short. That’s also not mention that Christian Rolland-Wallace could feasibly make the transition to safety from corner, or recent grad transfer Brenden Schooler could move back to safety from receiver as well to provide more depth! We will see!

Either way, it’ll be interesting to see what happens and how the Cats recover from losing Scottie. At Zona Zealots we would like to wish him the best and the Bear Down always!
