With the 2020 Arizona Baseball season officially over, awards are being doled out, and Austin Wells has been named an All-American by Collegiate Baseball.

The 2020 Arizona Baseball season came to an unceremonious end, but nonetheless we got to move on to 2021. And luckily for us fans, current sophomore and baseball star Austin Wells will be a part of the team next year.

For those that haven’t seen Austin play, you’re missing out, as he is arguably the best hitter on the team and has filled in nicely for the absences of former Wildcat standouts Nick Quintana and Cameron Cannon.

Originally a standout recruit at Bishop Gorman High School (Las Vegas, NV), Austin came to Tucson, foregoing his 35th round selection to the New York Yankees in the 2018 MLB Draft, in order to improve his skills and hopefully get drafted higher down the road.

So far the gamble has paid off!

Bursting onto the scene his freshman year, Austin put together a season worthy of the Arizona Baseball history books, as he became the first ever Wildcat to be named the Pac-12 Freshman of the Year!

Starting in all 56 games for the Cats, Austin ended the year with a .353 batting average, five homeruns, 60 RBIs, 15 doubles and seven triples to go along with a .462 on-base percentage!

Behind the plate he was just as impressive! As a freshman, Austin had an solid, .986 fielding percentage, accounting for just six total errors. Not bad for being the day one starter, fresh out of high school.

This past season, Austin was even better from the plate, as the Las Vegas native finished the year with an astounding .375 batting average, hitting two homeruns to go along with 14 RBIs, six doubles and a .527 on-base percentage.

He even went a perfect, 100 percent from behind the plate, committing zero errors through 15 games played!

Well, after such a tremendous season, Austin was named an All-American by Collegiate Baseball and fittingly so!

The guy has been absolutely stellar so far, and he’s showing that he made the right move in coming to Tucson, as his junior season could very well be his last year in Tucson as he will be draft eligible in 2021. As always, Bear Down, Arizona!
