With the latest CBS Power Five head coach rankings being released, Arizona Football head coach Kevin Sumlin falls 13 spots to No. 53 overall.

With months to go until the official start of the 2020 Arizona Football season, CBS Sports released an updated list, ranking all Power Five Conference head coaches, which includes an updated ranking for Kevin Sumlin.

As you may recall, coming in, Sumlin came in at No. 36 on the list, living a few, including myself to be rather happy and optimistic about the hire. However, now almost three years in and it’s been disastrous.

We all should have at least anticipated some adjustment, after all, in his first season, we were just a few missed plays away from making a bowl game.

But after last years’ 4-8 season, things are certainly turning sour, especially as the Wildcats are projected once again to be a bottom dweller in the Pac-12 Conference.

So with months until the start of the season, CBS updated their power five head coach rankings, and falling on that list is Sumlin.

Here is what CBS’ Tom Fornelli had to say regarding the ranking:

"“Kevin Sumlin: His stock continues to take a hit. Last year saw him drop from No. 36 to No. 40. This year, he plummets another 13 spots down to No. 53. It’s not without reason. After going 46-19 in his first five seasons as a head coach (four seasons in Houston, one at Texas A&M), Sumlin’s teams have gone 49-39 since.  2019 rank: 40 (-13).”"

Yikes, not really the direction you want to go, but given the lack of on-field results the last two seasons, it’s really hard to not blame the criticism.

Arizona Football is in a bad way, and they may be in desperate need for a miracle this year, or perhaps Sumlin could be on his way out.

I know there is at least some optimism, especially on offense with Grant Gunnell leading the way, however, the biggest questions remain to be on defense, and whether the defensive staff overhaul will prove to be the right choice.
