With the ongoing chaos and confusion following the death of George Floyd, Arizona Basketball head coach Sean Miller also makes a statement.

It’s been a confusing and strange time, especially amid the events that have transgressed over the past week or so, but as coach Adia Barnes and Kevin Sumlin made statements regarding the death of George Floyd, so has Arizona Basketball coach Sean Miller.

On Monday afternoon, Miller took to social media to make a statement regarding the death of Floyd, where he also backed his players and the impact he hopes to continue to have in the future.

Miller said:

"I am deeply saddened by the senseless act that cost George Floyd his life several days ago. Unfortunately, this incident reflects a bigger issue in today’s society: racism. The hatred that accompanies racism destroys everything in its path. There is no place for it anywhere in the world. In sports, we learn many valuable lessons that carry us throughout our lifetime. The ability to work cohesively together, overcoming adversity, demonstrating sportsmanship, and defining the meaning of being a great teammate all become part of us.However, there are no lessons learned without the complete understanding that we RESPECT each other at all time—regardless of race, color, gender, religion or national origin. We then can become a Family, solving our problems together and completely depending on each other as we compete as one.I fully support all our players that are active in promoting positive changes to society in a peaceful and meaningful manner. I look forward to listening to them, and I am committed to working together with them to do my part to help create a better future.I hope our great university, the city of Tucson, the state of Arizona and our country can find peace and togetherness through these difficult and emotional times."

As a head coach for a prominent basketball program, Miller is perhaps one of the most notable figures in the city of Tucson, and as we discussed earlier, he, the University and our head coaches have such a huge influence on the community as a whole. What they say or do often has a sizable impact.

Given the events that have transgressed over the past few weeks, it makes sense as to why Miller decided to say something. Also, as a head coach to a diverse group of individuals, those no doubt this issue may hit differently for him as it does others.
