With day two of the MLB Draft officially over, the Arizona Baseball team saw another player taken, as Matt Dyer is also headed to the ‘Big Apple’.

We truly do have an MLB Training Ground in Tucson, and with day two of the MLB Draft officially in the books, the Arizona Baseball team saw their second player drafted as the New York Mets selected Wildcat catcher/ utility, Matt Dyer on Thursday evening.

A standout at Mountain Ridge High School in Glendale, Ariz., Dyer originally began his career with the Oregon Ducks, before deciding to transfer to Tucson.

Sitting out in 2018 due to transfer rules, Matt waited his turn in 2019, and in his debut season with the Cats, he surely made his presence felt. In his 42 games with the Cats, Matt would have an impressive .393 batting average from the plate, hitting four home runs while driving in 28 RBI’s.

Defensively he was quite solid as well, accounting for 255 putouts to only three errors, compiling a .989 fielding percentage.

In 2020, Matt would see a slight dip though. Granted the season was cut short due to Covid, he still showed plenty of pop from the plate, hitting three home runs and driving in 18 runs through just 15 games. His average did fall though, as Dyer hit just .220 from the plate.

Nonetheless the Arizona native showed plenty of promise as he was drafted in the fourth round as the No. 120 overall pick by the New York Mets.

Interestingly enough, Dyer will join fellow Wildcat Austin Wells in the ‘Big Apple’, as well went No. 28 overall on Wednesday, however it was to the New York Yankees.

As Dyer officially heads to the MLB, he will have a great opportunity to prove himself and show his worth. Being a tall and lanky utility player, he has a lot of promise with his 6-foot-4-inch and 187 pound frame.

He has a smooth, natural swing and possesses a lot of pop in that bat. He also is a versatile player that can play at multiple positions, truly showing his worth! By all indications, the Mets should be thrilled with this pick!
