Another day, another commitment for the Arizona Football team, as Illinois-based linebacker Matthew Weerts picks the Wildcats!

Kevin Sumlin and the Arizona Football is on a roll! After having no commits just months ago, the Wildcats now have a little “Mojo”, adding their ninth commitment of 2021 in Illinois-based linebacker, Matt ‘Mojo’ Weerts.

A standout at Batavia High School (Batavia, IL), the 6-foot-2-inch, 215-pound linebacker took to Twitter on Monday afternoon, officially committing to Arizona. This just days after Arizona picked-up a big commitment in Seattle quarterback, Clay Millen.

Rated a three-star recruit in the class, Matt is a solid addition here as he is also considered the No. 1,415 recruit in the class of 2021, the No. 58 overall Inside Linebacker, and the No. 36 overall player in the state of Illinois according to 247Sports.

Holding offers from; Navy, Army, Boise State, Central Michigan, Toledo and Wyoming among others, Weerts decided to shut down his recruitment, and we’re excited to see the Wildcats add yet another linebacker to the class.

As you may recall, we’ve already discussed what we think were Arizona’s biggest recruiting needs this cycle, and it appears we are correct as the Wildcats have been very aggressive in recruiting linebackers. So far, Arizona has commitments from; Jackson Bailey, Kolbe Cage and Cole Batson, all who may likely play linebacker for Arizona at the next level.

With the addition of Matt, he essentially becomes the fourth player, and will really help bolster and deepen that group moving forward.

I personally like this addition, because Matt already possesses a good-sized frame, and will only continue to develop.

He’s already a two-sport star, also having wrestled at Batavia High School, and this past season, Matt put on quite the display on defense, totaling 86 tackles (61 solo), 8.0 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks, two interceptions, a forced fumble and two fumble recoveries according to Maxpreps.

On film there is a lot to like! Matt is quick, he’s strong, and athletic!

Matt can cover plenty of ground, showing great depth and awareness at the position, he’s aggressive in pursuing the football, tackles well and is a very competent linebacker. With continued development and coaching he could be a fantastic player!

Just watch!

At Zona Zealots, we’re excited about this addition and aren’t upset about Arizona Football adding a little ‘Mojo’! As always, Bear Down, Arizona!
