Could the future of Larry Scott in the Pac-12 be in jeopardy?
We’re certainly in unprecedented times due to Covid, and even with the Pac-12 feeling the pinch, the future of Larry Scott could be in jeopardy.
Could we finally be seeing the end of an abysmal Larry Scott reign in the Pac-12? I’m not sure, but as Oregonian columnist John Canzano writes in his latest article, there is a growing belief that conferences chancellors and presidents may want to terminate his [Scott’s] contract early.
As it stands, Larry’s contract runs until 2022, and terminating now could possibly save the conference a lot of money, especially as the current media deal runs until 2024, and the move would be made in hopes to save that deal.

Currently, Scott makes a staggering $5.3 million per year, and the move could be not only to try and help better position the conference, but its member institutions as well!
At Zona Zealots, I know we have certainly been vocal in wishing to see changes that would better support our schools both financially, but also from an exposure standpoint too!
And in my opinion, Arizona certainly hasn’t gotten much help from the conference itself, or in particular its leadership.
From the poor guidance, Larry having the largest salary for a conference commissioner, or the conference head quarters being in the expensive Bay area, it has been nothing but bad decision made after bad decision made. To top it all off, he has a $1.9 million loan he has yet to pay back the conference.
Given those issues, and the Pac-12 Network having been a failure thus far, it really is time for a change!
Need further proof? Since the inception of the Network, the conference has an estimated 18 million viewers. By comparison, the SEC had over 60 million as of 2017!
To me, it’s long overdue, and I really hope this happens. Selfishly, I think Arizona would certainly benefit from someone who hasn’t been so incompetant!
Someone who would potentially move the headquarters to a more modest location, would take on a smaller salary, and perhaps be able to get the Network into more households to ultimately boost the overall shared revenue for its member schools would be ideal.
Scott isn’t that guy as we’ve seen, and it’s time to move on!
Now is the time changes get made and hopefully for the better!
