Even with the 2020 Arizona Football season potentially in doubt, the Wildcats should still recruit NMSU Defensive Line transfer, Roy Lopez.

It’s been a hectic few months, especially for the Arizona Football team as they combat Covid in order to hopefully still have a season this year. Even with the uncertainty that is going on, the Wildcats should still operate normally, and to me, that means recruiting New Mexico State Defensive Line transfer, Roy Lopez.

For those that don’t know who Roy is, or why I am so adamant about this, but Roy has been a standout defensive lineman for the Aggies from 2016-19, and given the shortcomings the Wildcats have seen on the defensive side of the ball, especially along the defensive line, reaching out to a player like Roy makes sense.

A senior this past season, Roy appeared in just four games, but still has eligibility left, so naturally he decided he would announce his plans to transfer yesterday via social media.

Beyond just Arizona’s need along the defensive line, why I also feel like recruiting him makes sense is that Roy is actually an Arizona native with ties to Tucson. Despite being a standout lineman at Mesquite High School in Gilbert, Ariz., his dad actually coached at Sunnyside High School in Tucson. So with his ties to the state and the city specifically, this seems like a no-brainer to me!

Heck, Arizona was already successful in getting Aaron Blackwell, a New Mexico transfer that hailed from Mesa Community College, so why not get another defensive lineman transfer from a New Mexico school?

Roy reportedly stands a massive, 6-feet-2-inches and 310 pounds and would certainly provide immediate depth and talent along the defensive line. Additionally, he has been a rather productive college player.

Appearing in 39 games, Roy has accumulated 136 total tackles (43 solo), 19.5 tackles for loss and 8.0 sacks. Potentially having him alongside Aaron, Trevon Mason, Myles Tapusoa and Kyon Barrs among others, having a guy like Roy would be huge!

Just look at some of his highlights!

At Zona Zealots, we’re intrigued to see if the Wildcats decide to recruit Roy here, but there’s no doubting he is worth going after! As always, Bear Down, Arizona!
