Opinion: Arizona Football won’t have a season in the Spring

With the fall season officially being cancelled for the Arizona Football team in 2020, I have a feeling that the Wildcats won’t play in the Spring either.

Well, just as we hit the five-month mark on any Arizona Wildcats team last playing a game, now we won’t have an Arizona Football season this fall.

Making news on Tuesday afternoon, it started with the Big 10 announcing that they would be postponing the 2020 football, followed not long after by the Pac-12.

Apparently voting unanimously, the Pac-12 CEO Group decided to try and protect their student athletes by postponing all fall sports, with the hopes of restarting them in the Spring.

A decision I know many are frustrated with (including myself), but I can’t say I’m completely shocked. Especially as Covid is still seemingly spiraling out of control here in the United States, and there really hasn’t been any leadership at any level in terms of trying to put together a season that would even remotely work.

Now granted, Arizona has been doing their best to perform weekly tests on their student athletes, as well as have spaced out workouts in order to best prevent the spread of Covid.

Unfortunately, as we also learned today, not all the other schools have had the same testing and safety protocols, hence the reason why the Big 10 and Pac-12 have shut football down until the Spring.

But with the season now slated for the Spring, I have a feeling (and this is based on no prior knowledge), that there won’t be a Spring season.

As you may recall, we discussed this possibility awhile back, and even used comments from former USC quarterback Matt Leinart as well.

Leinart felt it would be a bad idea to have a season in the Spring, and as I begin to look at it more, it seems like a full season surely wouldn’t happen. Moreover, with a potential Spring season being so close to a Fall season, it seems like logistically, it may not work out to have two seasons happen so close to each other.

I just don’t foresee any seniors with hopes of the NFL Draft participating in a Spring season. You would have to think they will sit out with the hopes of having a good pro day/ combine workout with the hopes of being drafted in the 2021 NFL Draft.

Additionally, I then think you would still may have some student athletes that may not want to risk playing, that is if Covid is still rampant at that time.

Now granted, there are numerous players that want to play, and even want to play now. They’re collegiate athletes, they’re competitors, of course they want to compete. We’ll just wait to see if that actually happens.

Look, maybe I’m wrong and the NCAA and Pac-12 finally show true leadership to make this feasibly work, however, I just don’t see it. Do you share the sentiment as well? Let us know! And as always, Bear Down, Arizona!
