Arizona Football: Grant Gunnell will determine success of the Wildcats long term
By Jordan Cuda
With Grant Gunnell becoming the starting quarterback for Arizona Football in 2020-21, he is the key to long term success for the Wildcats.
Every great football program is typically led by a great quarterback, and as you take a look around the NFL and College football, teams who have had long term success have had outstanding quarterback. This is why Grant Gunnell is important to the future success of Arizona Football next year and the years to come.
When you think of the quintessential quarterback that epitomizes success, you think of players like Tom Brady and Peyton Manning in the NFL, who have always held the standard for so long.
Arizona Wildcats
Whether it’s college football, or the NFL, now you see talents like Lamar Jackson, Patrick Mahomes, Tua Tagovailoa Trevor Lawrence, Justin Fields, etc.
Regardless, when it comes to the QB position, coaches are always looking for that next talent to lead and transform their program(s).
For Arizona, we are unfortunately have not quite been as fortuitous in finding those said talents at QB. However, perhaps that could all change with Grant Gunnell now under center.
An elite QB that smashed virtually every passing record in high school, a player of his caliber can change a lot things very quickly. And honestly, I feel the Wildcat football program might not be too far away from taking that next step, especially if Grant can build off of last year.
An emerging talent and leader, he has really become a voice of the program, and perhaps big things could be on the horizon.
Standing 6-foot-6-inches at 225 pounds, Grant has the size and the arm to fit the pro-style QB, and could elevate the Wildcats to another level. Plus his stats as a Freshman are hard to ignore.
Playing in eight games, Grant threw for 1,239 yard while completing 101 of 155 passes. A major stat is that he only threw one interception to go along with nine touchdowns.
If Grant is able to build off this success, he could quickly rise the charts as one of the top QB’s in the Pac-12. With that being said, it could be a destination point for highly sought after recruits who are looking to pad their offensive stats.
Maybe, just maybe it can also cover up for a defense who is looking to find its footing. Putting up points is a good way to distract from a struggling defense. Also a good offense and QB can control the clock and keep the defense off the field for longer periods of time, thus not leaving the defense in vulnerable situations.
The flip of this coin, is a movie the Wildcats football faithful have seen far too many times. That is the departure of the head coach and a whole new crew coming in with a different idea on what it takes to be successful.
Again Arizona Football can’t afford to go through yet another rebuild… literally. Either way we are excited about the future!
The success of Grant Gunnell can’t be stated enough when it comes to the future of this program. The future success of this program weighs squarely on the shoulders of the man under center for the Wildcats. I am firm believer he has the ability to do it and the fans should also. As always, Bear Down and Go Cats!
