Just as the Arizona Football team was preparing for their first game against Utah, the Wildcats will have to wait another week to start the 2020 season.

Arizona Football is back…. err, well almost. Just as the Wildcats were prepared to start the 2020 season, Utah has canceled the first game of the season.

Making news on Friday afternoon, it was announced by the conference that Utah has requested to cancel the first game of the season against Arizona, after numerous players had tested positive for Covid-19.

While the news is shocking, it isn’t all that surprising as we had to figure something like this would happen at some point this season. Nonetheless, it is unfortunate how this all played out.

Here we are, roughly 24 hours before the game was supposed to kick-off, and now Utah decides to cancel the game. Could be wrong here, but part of the requirements in kicking the season off for 2020, meant more frequent player testing and evaluations.

With Cal and Washington canceling their game just a day prior, why did it take so long for Utah to now suddenly cancel? Either their testing and isolation protocols are not as good as Arizona’s and other Pac-12 institutions, or this was a failure by their program.

Now granted I know there weren’t a lot of positives heading into the season and in particular the game against Utah, as many have been predicting the Wildcats to finish last in the Pac-12 South. However, the news is surely disappointing, especially for the players who have been working to prepare for this game.

As it stands, it appears the Wildcats and the Utes won’t have any plans to make up this game. I know some had hoped for Washington and Arizona to use this week as a make up game, but the Pac-12 already confirmed that that won’t happen.
