TUCSON, AZ – History was made on Friday evening at Arizona Stadium and it, unfortunately, was for all the wrong reasons for Arizona Football (0-5, 0-5).

On not only a night but a year that many Arizona Football players, coaches, and fans alike would like to forget, the 2020 season was capped by a 70-7 loss to in-state rival, Arizona State.

In an abbreviated season that was unlike any others, as there were a lot of firsts this season. It was the first time the Wildcats ever finished the season winless, the first time they ever lost 10-straight (we’re now up to 12-straight), and the first time we ever gave up 70 points to ASU.

Playing for pride, or at least so you would hope, this one was over after a matter of minutes.

On the opening kick-off, ASU returned it for 100-yards to house, taking a 7-0 lead. Two plays later, Arizona fumbled inside their own 10, and the Sun Devils capitalized, scoring on the ensuing play to make it 14-0.

No matter what the Wildcats did offensively in that first half, it didn’t work, and it was an absolute disaster. Especially as ASU extended their lead to 21, then to 28, and then to 42, before the Wildcats would even respond. A touchdown from Michael Wiley from 20-yards out with 3:38 to go in the second quarter. It was their only points of the game.

Hoping for better results and better adjustments in the second half, things somehow got worse in this one.

Trailing 42-7 to start the third quarter, ASU put up 21 more points, extending their lead to 63-7 heading into the fourth and final quarter.

Hoping for any sort of fight, any semblance of a “Hey, I don’t want to lose by 60+, I actually give a shit”, the attitude and fight weren’t there. Instead, ASU scored again, a one-yard touchdown run from Jackson He to extend their lead to 70-7 with 7:02 left to play.

And if things couldn’t get any worse, three plays later, Rhett Rodriguez threw his second interception of the game, increasing Arizona’s turnover total to seven… that’s right, seven! From that point, it all but ended the game.

Bad Guys – 70
“Good” Guys – 7

With the loss, the Wildcats can finally, and thankfully shut the door on the miserable and embarrassing 2020 season, so now let’s hope the Wildcats can actually make the right choice and move on from this staff because this a low that I have never seen from Arizona in my 33 years on Earth.

Highlights:

  • This was the most lopsided loss for Arizona in this rivalry.
  • Arizona finished the game with as points as they had turnovers, seven.
  • The Wildcats’ offense could only muster 350 yards of offense.
  • Arizona lost its program worst, 12th-straight game.
  • Arizona now owns a four-game losing streak to ASU for the first time since 1978.

At Zona Zealots, hopefully things change, because this one was rough to watch. As always, Bear Down, Arizona!
