Arizona Football is progressing along in their first offseason under Head Coach Jedd Fisch, however, the importance of getting a quarterback may now be greater than ever.
It has been a busy offseason for newly hired Arizona Football Head Coach Jedd Fisch. He has already hired one hell of a coaching staff, and he has also seen a significant number of recruiting wins thus far as well. However, with the recent de-commitment of 2021 quarterback Clay Millen, landing a quarterback may now be more important than ever.
As it stands, the Wildcats have just two scholarship players on the roster, Will Plummer and Kevin Doyle, so saying that the quarterback room is a bit bare is putting it lightly.
Arizona Wildcats
Remember, in the past few months, Grant Gunnell has transferred to Memphis, and Rhett Rodriguez is heading to the University of Louisiana at Monroe to play for his dad Rich. Rich was recently hired as the offensive coordinator at ULM.
So with about three weeks to go until Signing Day and Spring Ball just around the corner after that, you hope that Fisch can work his magic a bit more and add another quarterback, preferably a transfer.
With options dwindling, these would be the best options for Arizona Football, assuming there is mutual interest.
Ryan Hilinski
College: South Carolina
Year: Sophomore
Remaining Eligibility: Two Years
A native of Southern California, Ryan announced that he would be transferring from the SEC, and there’s a possibility he could be looking to head back West.
Perhaps luckily for us, Ryan was a high school teammate of current Wildcat, Stanley Berryhill III, so maybe that relationship benefits us in this recruitment here.
If Ryan came here, he would become the immediate starter for the Wildcats and would boost the level of play and expectations at quarterback.
Micah Bowens
College: Penn State
Year: Freshman
Remaining Eligibility: Four Years
A former standout quarterback at the talented Bishop Gorman High School in Las Vegas, NV, Micah was recruited by Arizona out of high school before committing to Penn State.
Micah could be looking for a situation where he is not buried on the depth chart, and if that is the case, Arizona could be a legitimate option for him. He has West Coast ties and with Tucson being a short plane ride away from Vegas, this could be a potential landing spot.
He is a talented, dual-threat quarterback, and with more competition under center the Wildcats have, the better off they are.
Austin Kendall
College: West Virginia
Year: Senior
Remaining Eligibility: One Year
A former quarterback at Oklahoma from 2016-18, Austin then transferred to West Virginia, playing sparingly in just the past two seasons.
Well, with the recent eligibility rule changes due to Covid, Austin has gotten another year of eligibility and is looking for a new destination. Look no further than Arizona!
The Wildcats are in desperate need of help at quarterback, and Austin could serve as a one-year stop-gap at the position, or at least until Coach Fisch is able to stabilize and build this position a bit more.
These are just a few options, and keep in mind, Fisch and the Wildcats could wait until later in the Spring when there could be more players that enter the transfer portal. Either way, landing a quarterback is now vital. As always, Bear Down, Arizona!
